Heath Schroyer also left to become an assistant in 2005, did he not?

Also, Desirae Hansen is in the portal. I'm a little surprised so many people want to bolt PSU now that they have decent facilities.

True, but an assistant's job at Texas Tech is far better than an assistant's job at Fresno. Going from the Big Sky to the Big 12 is a pretty good jump.

Heard on Portland sports talk radio today that PSU AD Cleary is hopeful that both the men's and women's jobs will be filled by April 15. Rumor is that the two "interim" coaches, Jase Coburn for the men and Chelsey Gregg for the women, have the inside track. Coburn has a recommendation from Peery.

Montana WBB Hires Brian Holsinger

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Holsinger was the lead assistant &/or co-lead assistant at Oregon State. He was also head coach at Montana Tech from 2005-07. Interim coach Mike Petrino was one of the four finalists (according to Skyline's report), but he was not ultimately selected.

Jase Coburn named Portland States men's basketball coach.

Chelsey Gregg named Portland State's women's basketball coach

https://goviks.com/news/2021/4/16/WBB_20210416.aspx

You may remember that Jase Coburn was the PSU assistant who got married last year after the tournament was cancelled.

Sac State WBB Hires Mark Campbell

Campbell was the lead assistant for Kelly Graves at Oregon the last 6 years. He was also a finalist for the Montana job.

I'm disappointed. While I didn't know that Bunky Harkleroad was gone (it turns out that he didn't resign, and he wasn't fired; he was simply at the end of his contract and the team hadn't shown any improvement, so the contract was just allowed to lapse), I would have been much happier with the hiring of a coach like Sherri Murrell or Gillian d'Hondt....

they must be certain that program is going D-2.
President reports to the BoT in May. The uncertainty doesn’t help an athlete’s willingness to stay but nothing has been decided yet. Schuller’s firing is more worrisome at the moment.
Seems odd given the financial scrutiny EWU athletics is in right now. Why not just suffer through one more year rather than eat the last year of the contract?

Impressive hire imo. A builder and a recruiter. Should be interesting to see what can be accomplished given the horrific facilities.

Good question. Why go through the process now. Might be a good sign.

I took it to be a bad sign. Something bad off the court to trigger a move. Meh, EWU will be fine.

Well… 6 players entered the portal in, like, 3 days just before she was fired, so it might've been a "stop the bleeding" move.

Then again, at least 2 players have entered the portal since Schuller was fired (including the Freshman of the Year), so that obviously didn't work. :?

Campbell poaches one of his fellow coaches from Oregon to be Associate HC on his staff.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State women's basketball head coach Mark Campbell announced on Monday the first member of his staff, associate head coach Xavier Lopez.

Lopez, who goes by "Xavi" (Cha-vee) served on the Oregon women's basketball staff alongside Campbell for the last seven years, including the last four as an assistant coach. He was a key part of the program's five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and its Final Four run in 2019.

Jenny Huth Mysteriously Resigns as NoCo WBB Coach

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

https://www.greeleytribune.com/2021/04/ ... rts=sports

She was 48-41 in three years and brought in this past season's MVP, Alisha Davis.

There were a couple posts on NoCo's board about her allegedly driving off players/an assistant coach, but those were from more than a year ago. The only players in the portal for this offseason didn't have notable stats.

Re: EWU Fires Wendy Schuller

Schuller was the longest tenured coach in the Big Sky in any of the big 3 sports (20 years), and the second-longest tenured in Big Sky WBB history behind Robin Selvig (38 years total, 34 years in the Big Sky/MWAC). Schuller still had 1 year on her contract, but 6(!) EWU players had entered the transfer portal in the last 3 days before this firing.

Schuller finishes her Big Sky tenure with an overall record of 277-322, and a conference record of 166-169. She was well above .500 in conference play prior to the last 2 seasons, however. Schuller never took EWU to the NCAAs (their only appearance was 1987), but her Eagles did win the regular-season title in 2010 (likely saving Schuller's job at the time) and a WNIT game in 2015.
I don't why I didn't catch this earlier, but the bolded statement above was incorrect. Carla Taylor was the HC at Weber for 23 years (1988-11)

Big Sky MVP Into the Portal

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Three NoCo players entered the portal before Jenny Huth's abrupt resignation, and now three have entered since she quit (including their two leading scorers). That program suddenly doesn't appear to have anything right now.

Kristen Mattio, former head coach at West Texas A&M, named new head coach at Northern Colorado.

West Texas A&M beat both NAU and Weber this past season. Mattio had spent some time as an assistant at Montana State before her time at West Texas A&M.

Too bad she inherited a team with basically nothing left. :?

And then there's the Eastern Washington situation. EWU fired Schuller a month-and-a-half ago, and it doesn't appear like they've done a thing since.

OK, they apparently hired Joddie Gleason a week-&-a-half ago. Gleason was the lead assistant at Seattle U, and was previously the HC at Humboldt State.

Defending Big Sky MVP Alisha Davis is apparently transferring to DII CSU-Pueblo.

Davis completely dominated the Big Sky this past year. Not only did she average a double-double (17.1 ppg, 10.1 rpg), she was top-5 in steals (not common for a post player), 2nd. in FG%, and 1st. in blocks. Transferring down is definitely not what I expected. Maybe she's a stat junkie who wants a chance to put up some video-game numbers, I dunno… :?
