Philadelphia Union's first head coach

Philadelphia will introduce Peter Nowak as its first head coach at a press conference on Friday, sources with knowledge of the hire told Soccer By Ives on Wednesday. Nowak, the only man to ever win an MLS Cup as a player and head coach, is leaving his post as U.S. national team assistant coach to take over as head coach for the Union, which is set to begin play in 2010.

Good hire. There were a lot of rumors surrounding who it would be. Now lets see if they can get a good DP and young prospect.

Meh. I was never that big a fan of his in DC, our guys always crashed out way too early. Piotr had his set group and worked them to death. Two years in a row we came out strong, burned out, and absolutely lost in the playoffs.

Philly can have him.

The microphone was passed around through a throng of anxious Philadelphia Union fans.

One by one, they had a bevy of questions for Union team manager Peter Nowak. In between, they were chanting his name and focused in on his every word during a fan event Wednesday night at Tir Na Nog at 1600 Arch Street.

DP = Designated Player, the MLS rule where you pay a player outside of the salary cap ie: David Beckham or Freddie Lundberg.

And a good young prospect or player would be someone like Freddy Montero in Seattle.
