Unpopular opinion here:

I think the NASCAR season is a bit too long.

I'm not sure that's unpopular, as I happen to agree with you.

The odd thing is, the season has always been this long (it was year-round before the 70s); the number of races simply varied.

For instance, 1985: Daytona 500 was Feb 17 and last race at Riverside was Nov 17. However, there were only 28 races.

And not to detract from Richard Petty's win total, but they ran way more races in the 1960s, including 62 races in the 1964 season. They had weeknight races between the weekend races and raced year-round.

Kyle Larson sure helped JJ win on that last restart. Thank GOD it wasn't KyBusch or Joey.

No driver finished every race on the track.

Only one driver had at least 35 finishes.

That's what has happened at Homestead the 3 years of the current Chase. The other 36 drivers don't want to be the one that wreck one of the 4 championship drivers, so they don't race them hard and often just get out of the way. Its no coincidence that all 3 years of the current Chase format one of the Championship 4 has won Homestead. On Sunday for part of the race you had all final 4 drivers in the top 5. I don't think Larson intentionally let JJ pass him, but he sure didn't push the issue and race him hard like he would have during a regular race.

Agreed. Logano also overdrove the first turn on the last restart. His crew brought him in to completely tape the grill and put on higher pressure tires on that late stop. His car was obviously tight and he drove in a little too hard and drifted high and couldn't catch Johnson at that point.
