Re: McCarthy to Cowboys
From what I've read, the year off has been good for him to reassess his approach and put together a pretty good staff.

I am happy with it. Anyone know much about Mike Nolan as D coordinator? I am not familiar enough with him to know if it's a good choice.

He's been around...Vidav wrote:I am happy with it. Anyone know much about Mike Nolan as D coordinator? I am not familiar enough with him to know if it's a good choice.
was one of the zone blitz innovators (designed to fuck up short crossing routs and confuse QB's)
He'll play the cowboys in a single high safety
with 8 or 9 guys loitering around the line of scrimmage thing - that young QB's hate
That configuration takes away the play action because the QB can't get under center
and turn his back on the defense... you have to play shotgun against it
so you can see who does what after the snap - there's no pre-snap read in that defense
He's smart
He's going to LOVE Smith and Vander Esch !!!!

you're in great shape Vidav

Didn't want to make a new thread so:
Rhule from Baylor to Carolina
Joe Judge (NE WR/ST coordinator) to Giants with Giants interviewing Garrett for the OC position

Did you make that face when the Ravens hired the Eagles DB/ST Coordinator, some dude named John Harbaugh?89Hen wrote:tribe_pride wrote:Joe Judge (NE WR/ST coordinator) to Giants![]()

https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/rav ... story.htmlJohn Harbaugh was hired by the Ravens yesterday in a bold move that gives the longtime assistant coach his first head-coaching opportunity.
The Ravens will introduce the 45-year-old Philadelphia Eagles secondary coach, who comes from a football family, during a news conference at noon today.
Harbaugh, who has never been in charge of an offense or a defense in the National Football League, made a name for himself as a special-teams coach.
"It's not a well-traveled path, but we'll prove special-teams coordinators can coach," Harbaugh told Philadelphia radio station WIP a half-hour after being hired. "But a football coach is a football coach. I guess the Ravens saw something they liked."

This hire is a gamble from the standpoint that Harbaugh has never been a coordinator on either side of the ball, so the question is: Can he manage an entire team?

Yeah, it happens. Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th round.93henfan wrote:9 winning seasons and a Super Bowl, going on two Super Bowls, later...
I just find it surprising the Giants would go this route, not commenting on how well he will or won't do.
Josh McDaniels... that wouldn't have made me

Re: McCarthy to Cowboys
How does Judge compare to Harbaugh? How good were the Eagles special teams and secondary when Harbaugh coached them? Did Harbaugh make them better? How good were the Patriots special teams and wide receivers93henfan wrote:Did you make that face when the Ravens hired the Eagles DB/ST Coordinator, some dude named John Harbaugh?89Hen wrote:![]()

Re: McCarthy to Cowboys
One thing is clear: the NFC East appears to have vivid memories of Steve Spurrier, as evidenced by their hires. I thought Rhule would have been a good get for any of them, but they didn't want to take a chance on a college guy. I hope he does well in Carolina. Better than Spurrier did in DC.89Hen wrote:Yeah, it happens. Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th round.93henfan wrote:9 winning seasons and a Super Bowl, going on two Super Bowls, later...

Heck, people raised eyebrows when Andy Reid was first hired by the Eagles after being just the QB's coach at Green Bay (and before that the TE's coach). Head coaching is more about running the organization (well the team) and setting the tone than anything else.93henfan wrote:Did you make that face when the Ravens hired the Eagles DB/ST Coordinator, some dude named John Harbaugh?89Hen wrote:![]()

Re: McCarthy to Cowboys
This is exactly why it's so hard for me to watch "modern" football. Less than a yard for the first down or inside the one going for the touchdown, and they spread everyone out to throw it or split out FOUR with an ace back ten yards deep and take the ball ALL THE WAY back to him, and he doesn't even move until the ball is in his gut, and they wonder why the play is stuffed five yards deep. I get that they're afraid of what happened to Patrick Mahomes earlier this year, and that's why they avoid the sneak, if the sneak even enters into their tiny pea brains. But two things against that argument are that such a thing is a fluke, and they were pulling this for twenty stinking years BEFORE what happened to Mahomes. It's a fluke because on a sneak, there's not enough time for a DL or LBer to generate enough speed (and therefore force) to jack up a quarterback. It's much more likely that a QB on the run (or, God forbid, just standing there after handing off, and thereby telling the defense that it's a run) gets jacked up. The best play for these situations will ALWAYS be quarterback sneak out of a tight set. If you absolutely MUST do something else, run it out of the Notre Dame Box, which pre-aligns blockers in the likely gaps so the QB (technically the TB, but not in modern parlance) or the RB won't get stuffed five yards deep....Silenoz wrote:

While I'm sure Jon was just trying to poke some good-natured fun at me, I firmly believe that the only two men qualified to coach the Cowboys are Tom Landry and Danny White.dbackjon wrote:Should have been Danny White
That said, McCarthy is DEFINITELY better than Garrett, but I do have concerns as noted higher up in this thread. I'm really too old-school for this hire to sit well with me....
