Raiders Nearly Lose Game Because of Lost Kicker.

The Raiders took a rare overtime delay of game penalty because kicker Daniel Carlson was warming up and nowhere near Gruden when he made a late decision to kick what he intended to be the game-winning field goal. Fortunately, Gruden was bailed out by Derek Carr's subsequent game-winning touchdown pass.

This is odd to me given the Raiders past: they once went through a string of five straight games won by the backup quarterback, who was also the kicker. George Blanda correctly thought that being already in the game concentrating on calling plays kept him from freaking out on the sideline while awaiting the game winning kick. We've all seen kickers get the "yips" while awaiting pressure-packed situations. While this may not apply to Carlson, he WAS U/A, and that was almost as bad as a freaked-out kicker. If you're a kicking specialist during overtime, you place is beside the coach, particularly if he's planning on lightning field goal, as the Raiders obviously were being out of time outs, as Gruden has also mismanaged THAT....

My fantasy team was down 29 points going into last nights game. I had 2 players yet to play, Waller (TE) and Queen (LB). Waller struggled in the 1st half but made it happen in the 2nd.

Ended up winning by 2.44 points. Waller far exceeded his projections.

Raiders in Deep Doo-Doo

For some reason, backup quarterback Marcus Mariota entered the game for one play, ran for 31 yards, and then mysteriously disappeared. Today, Gruden admitted that Mariota was hurt. The Raiders were required to disclose that during the game, and didn't do that. They've made this mistake before. Look for the Raiders to get another fine....

Cowboys in Deep Doo-Doo

DE DeMarcus Lawrence is out iindefinitely with a broken foot suffered at practice today. The Cowboys are now dangerously thin at DE, and hope Randy Gregory can return from the COVID list before going to L.A. Remaining DEs have a whopping career total of 10 sacks, and some haven't even played a regular season down.

It's bad. Real bad. Surgery, and out 6-8 weeks. Minimum....

Also: RT La'el Collins suspended 5 games (drugs), WR Michael Gallup on IR 3-5 weeks (calf). WR Robert Foster (Alabama) signed to replace Gallup.

Mariota is out multiple weeks. Nathan Peterman is now #2. No word on signing a third quarterback. This wreaks havoc in the "significant role" Gruden had for Mariota this season, in the vein of Taysom Hill and Trey Lance....

Holy gift last night. Giants left 8 points on the field and give the kicker two chances. Heinike played well though.

Or 11 if you count Jones taking a sack moving them out of FG position.

Crazy game. There were a number of great plays. And then there was the scattered buffoonery throughout the game.

Nice game on NBC here, but Harbaugh made the wrong play call on that two-point attempt, IMO. Automatically throwing on a two-point is just wrong because there's not much room for the receivers to get open (we're not in Canada with 25-yard end zones). Get the quarterback under center in the I-Formation and run the triple option. So long as the O-Line does its job and the QB makes the correct read on the EMOL (which isn't a problem when your quarterback is named Lamar Jackson), it's pretty much a guaranteed score....

The defense won the game for Chicago today. They clearly made the wrong choice for backup quarterback, and were apparently so biased about wanting to trade him that they left the better choice inactive. Fields clearly isn't ready, save for the running game. I'm sure he WILL be later, but it's clearly too soon to throw him to the wolves. Until the Bears get a better backup, so long as Dalton is out, Foles is the appropriate choice. Is a Super Bowl victory worthless now? SMH....

Just wait till next week, Eagles/cowboys on Monday night football. Sure, I'll watch because it's my team, but that's not an attractive matchup at all.

Yup. The Cowboys are always a scary team the first three months of a season. More talent on the field for sure.

Plus, the Eagles' geriatrics are already starting to convalesce, and it's not even October yet. The Brandon's are both dinged; Graham done for the year (very bad news). Won't be long until Lane tears a bicep and Kelce pulls an ass cheek.

Betting Favorite For MVP

Kyler Murray?!?

No way. For me, Carr, Prescott, Brady, Mahomes, and Jackson are WAY ahead of Murray. Probably Wilson, too. And I can't stand Brady....

A Running Back and His Father's Ashes

So Packers RB Aaron Jones lost a necklace containing his father's ashes during a game Monday night. His father died a while back from COVID. At the post-game presser, Jones was upbeat, claiming that his dad would be OK with that; "He'd be happy. He'd be like, 'If you lose it anywhere, lose it in the end zone." Packers trainer Bryan "Flea" Engel stayed after the game, combing the field for the necklace, and FINALLY found it at about 1:45 AM...IN THE END ZONE.

Good on you, Flea! A team is MUCH more than the roster of players. The front office, coaches, and training staff all care for the players, at every level of every sport. WTG....
