The Women's Hockey Semifinals have been set following Switzerland's 4-2 minor upset of the Sovs and Finland's destruction of Japan (by the point-equivalent of a Canadian football game, 7-1). Canada will face Switzerland, while the Americans will play Finland.

USA beat Canada 4-2 to seize control of Group A, and Germany beat host China. The Soviets are losing again despite being flush with hockey talent. Apparently, they're getting sent to the sin bin at a record rate, and the Czech Republic isn't. CZE leads URS 3-2 with the third frame yet to come. Switzerland vs. Denmark will complete the second leg of the round robin.

Great news in the world of snowboarding: USA took home the inaugural mixed doubles event, as Lindsey Jacobellis got her second gold of these Games paired with Nick Baumgartner, who becomes the oldest person to win an Olympic snowboarding medal at 40.

Play in Men's Hockey Group B is complete after the Czech Republic beat the Sovs 6-5 in OT after a crazy third period, and Denmark beat Switzerland 5-3.

Group play officially ends tomorrow as Canada plays host China and USA faces Germany in Group A and Group C has Slovakia vs. Latvia and Finland tangles with rival Sweden.

I hear reports of people reading that the snow in the Olympics is 100% man-made. Probably some right-wing, anti-China propaganda. The last Olympics had 90% man-made snow, the one previous to that was 80%. By 2050, China won't be able to host Winter Olympics, because the temp will be too warm to even support artificial snow. Fewer and fewer sites will be able to continue host Winter games.

2. During group play, three points are available for a regulation-time win, two points for an OT/SO win, one point for an OT/SO loss, and nothing for a regulation-time loss.

3. In-group placing will be subject to these tie-breaking procedures:
a. Points.
b. If two teams are tied, they will be separated by H2H.
c. If more teams are tied:
(1) H2H points.

So far, only URS has qualified for the Quarterfinals. Five of eight teams have finalized their place in the play-in "Qualification Playoff:" CZE, LAT, SUI, SVK, and host CHN, which is bringing up the rear. Technically, Germany is placing between CZE and LAT at #8 right now, but Group A still has one leg left that could shift things. Currently, the Soviets are in the #1 spot, but USA and either Finland or Sweden will likely both jump them. Canada will also likely move up a few spots from #6 as they have CHN for their last pool play game....

So, Slovakia closed out Group C play with a huge win over Latvia, 5-2. Finland got their first Olympic win over Sweden in something like 24 years, 3-2 OT. Finland has jumped the Sovs into the 1 seed for the knockout rounds, but the US, currently in the 3 slot, will leapfrog both of them if they close out this game against Germany (the Americans lead 3-1 after an insurance PP goal to start the third frame). That will close out the byes, as even a regulation-time win for Canada against host China won't get them past Sweden, which has an OTL giving them an extra point. So, this won't be final until after Canada's game, but it looks like we'll see the following in the knockout rounds (EDIT: this is now confirmed after CAN's big win vs. CHN):

Play-In Round
15 FEB

9 SVK d. 8 GER 4-0 (winner vs. 1 USA)
5 CAN d. 12 CHN 7-2 (winner vs. 4 SWE)
10 SUI d. 7 CZE 4-2 (winner vs 2 FIN)
6 DEN d. 11 LAT 3-2 (winner vs. 3 URS)

Quarterfinals
16 FEB

9 SVK d. 1 USA 3-2 SO
4 SWE d. 5 CAN 2-0
2 FIN d. 10 SUI 5-1
3 URS d. 6 DEN 3-1

Semifinals
18 FEB

2 FIN d. 9 SVK 2-0
3 URS d. 4 SWE 2-1 SO

Bronze Medal Game
19 FEB

9 SVK vs. 4 SWE

Gold Medal Game
20 FEB

2 FIN vs. 3 URS

Women's Hockey is over. Team USA fought hard, but gave up too many goals early to overcome. Canada wins gold 3-2, though they didn't really do a good job of finishing the job, as USA scored with 13 ticks left, with a 5-hole goal off a rebound from the goalie's pads.

Gold: Canada
Silver: USA
Bronze: Finland
4. Switzerland

Eliminated in QF:

5. URS
6. Japan
7. Czech Republic
8. Sweden

Eliminated in Group Play:

9. China
10. Denmark

I don't know, I thought Canada looked pretty solid throughout the 3rd period holding that 3-1 lead. The US goal with 13 seconds left came on a power play and with the goalie pulled (US pulled the goalie with something like 3 minutes left). So it was only 6 on 4 before the US could score, and it was on a scramble where the Canadian goalkeeper lost her stick for several seconds. US just didn't have any scoring punch, and Canada just kept them at arm's length.

Not really stunning considering Canada didn't make the semis either. Just shows you how much not having the worlds best players impacts things. The level of play was mediocre. The Beanpot tournament last week was better hockey.

I would argue a big deal as well was that the team was thrown together at the last minute and had not even scrimmaged before the Olympics. That was the issue because of how late the NHL/NHLPA decided to not send players. I get why it was so late but the team could not play like a team because of it.

Piss poor US performance so far. Tied with China in gold medals. Fourth in total medal count.

I saw Simone Biles on one of the morning shows sympathizing with the US female skiier who was supposed to bring home multiple medals but choked in every event.

Sometime in the past 20-30 years or so, we went from being a country that celebrates winners to a country that tolerates and runs cover for losers.

I have seen about an hour of curling so far and it is probably the least amount I have ever watched of an Olympics. The 2018/2020 Olympics probably ruined it for me with all of the woketivists blabbing on and the news lapping it up. I realize that it is probably a minority of athletes but it was reported like it was the majority and I do not have time to listen to their ilk preach from their high horse at us peasants trying to get through life.

So now the Russian teenager who won the silver medal is having a tantrum because she didn’t get the gold and now says she’ll never skate again. What whiny little cheating bitches they all are. I hope they all drown in vodka-laced borscht. Putin too.

Saw her complaining after she realized she was getting a silver. She is probably the best at the turns but that is only 1/2 the score or so. She is very mechanical in her movement and you need to make it flow. She almost got away with it but the gold medalist did a better job of combining both.

Men's Curling

Ten teams made the tournament, so pool play consisted of nine matches. The top four made the playoffs; in this case, that meant that every team with a winning record in pool play made the playoffs. That was GBR, SWE, USA (led by Skip John Shuster), and CAN. Canada secured the Bronze Medal, with the Gold Medal Game still to come.

Pool Play

1. GBR 8-1
2. SWE 7-2
3. CAN 5-4 (won tiebreak with USA via victory)
4. USA 5-4
5. CHN 4-5
6. NOR 4-5
7. SUI 4-5
8. URS 4-5
9. ITA 3-6
10. DEN 1-8

Semifinals
17 FEB

1 GBR d. 4 USA 8-4
2 SWE d. 3 CAN 5-3

Bronze Medal Game
18 FEB

3 CAN d. 4 USA 8-5

Gold Medal Game
19 FEB

2 SWE d. 1 GBR 5-4
