Getting back to the original discussion, I never said that goal post type pads would have saved his life, I said some sort of safety device. Are you, the self-proclaimed physicist, saying that a padded wall or a net that completely separates the steel beams from the track wouldn't do any good?

It's a done deal. The wall is up, as well as pads (which are a bit of a joke IMHO) past the wall. They also moved the men's start well down the course to where the women start, reducing speeds by ~10 mph:

I'm shocked they showed the impact on NBC. Never seen them show someone die. Bad taste if you ask me.

I think it would be a beautiful Olympic gesture to name that I Beam the "Kumaritashvili Pole" and maybe make it the finish line for future events.
