Brady done for the year?

Post by dbackjon »

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is expected to miss the rest of the 2008 season with what two sources described as a severe injury to his left knee, suffered in the first quarter of the Pats’ 17-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Gillette Stadium Sunday.

While New England coach Bill Belichick said in his postgame press conference that he had no update on the status of Brady’s injury, a source close to the quarterback indicated it involved serious damage to the knee. That could include a torn anterior cruciate ligament and perhaps other ligament and cartilage damage.

“It’s bad,” a team source said. “We’re going to have to play without him.”

Brady was hurt as he stepped up in the pocket to make a throw to wideout Randy Moss. Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard, who was on the ground, lunged forward and struck Brady’s leg, which buckled as he released the ball.

Brady was helped off the field and was later led down a staircase by team officials, presumably to undergo tests.

Fourth-year quarterback Matt Cassel, who had thrown just 39 passes in his career before Sunday, replaced Brady and completed 13 of 18 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Cassel, who backed up Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC, hasn’t been a starting quarterback since high school. He won a competition with Matt Gutierrez during the preseason to retain the job as Brady’s primary backup.

this is horrible for the patriots. They are a good team still but Cassel isn't great and they will be a decent team. The AFC east is stornger this year and they may not actually coast to a division title.

Hopefully it is only something minor and he isn't out for the season.

Heard they may be bringing in Simms for a look. Also Daunte Culpepper is still out there...

Too bad for The Patriots, don't like to see players suffer injuries like that.

Even if they bring them in its about 4 weeks before they will be ready. This is tough for the Patriots. Cassel isn't that bad he should be able to carry them to a decent season though.

Dante wouldn't be the QB there for 2 reasons. He is retired. And he would make too many mistakes, fumbles and INT's. He is not a good decision maker.

reports are everyone they are bringing in is for backups. I think Cassel will be fine, he looked good in that game vs. the Chiefs.

You're basing this on what, one game? Dude had 33 passes as a collegian and 39 as a pro before Brady went down, and you're using that as a basis for saying he's not great? All that means is that he hasn't had a chance to show what he's got.

Let Cassel finish the season before you make that judgment call. Remember, he played for a UOP coach in college; that's good enough for me.

I am basing it on the fact that watched him in every preseason game for 4 years and watched him in other games he got starts in. Lodi,CA doesn't get to watch him play in at least 4 games a year like has over the last 4 years.

He will be decent, he is a decent player, but he will not be great look at his track record.

I believe that similar things were said about the immortal Jim Plunkett when he was picked up by the Whiners. Later, he took the Raiders to two Super Bowl wins.

NE seem to be doing just fine without Brady so far. Cassel didn't make any big mistakes on Sunday while his team won. Moss wasn't a big factor, maybe drawing some DC but a lot of the passes were short dump offs or slants that picked up 5-11 yards a pop.

Just brought back the 2001 game plans...short dump off passes to several recievers...mixed in with efficient, but not flashy running...and tight defense...

Worked then...got them to the SB...why not try it again...

Cassel will grow and get more comfortable with his new position...all they asked him to do this weekend was not lose the game...and he did everything asked well...

I have always enjoyed the short dump off passes with any offense. It keeps the D off the line a little bit so you can still control the clock with some runs up the gut and off the end while getting some good yardage.

I heard there was serious consideration given to dumping Cassel during pre-season in favor of Matt Gutierrez. I guess the Jets game put the kibosh on that.

IMO, there's only one QB qualified to replace Matt Cassel in New England (besides Brady, anyway). That man is Steve Grogan.
