They signed a new 20 year deal with Fox Sports Southwest that will pay the team $150 million annually. Thats the highest TV revenue for a team not owning its own network.

They paid $593 million for the Rangers part of that number was an assumed debt of $208 million. To use the money to directly pay off debt it would take one and a third seasons tv revenue. To offset the whole sale price it would be about 4 yers of the 20 year deal... Still plenty of cash left for the team. Of course this doesnt include the atleast $15 million they get from the MLB deals with FOX, ESPN and TBS. Their new tv deal alone will pay their payroll each season leaving the other revenue along with concessions, ticket sales, merchandising, advertising as a nice chunk of profits for the team.

Well Texas does have the 5th largest media market of all the MLB teams (New York, LA, Philadelphia, Chicago) so they can expect a larger valued deal than most other teams. Most of the top market teams have their own networks and can make a lot more than what Texas is bringing in.

Small market teams shouldn't expect to get anywhere near what Texas got. For example, Pittsburgh gets about $50 million per season or a third of what Texas is getting, Pittsburgh shouldn't expect to come anywhere near the Texas deal.

It may be a large media market, but their local TV ratings have never been strong. That's football territory, and the only two teams which matter down there are the Dallas Cowboys and the UT Longhorns.

I fear, for the good of baseball, Mauer is the exception. I would love to see Lee fall under that category as well though. Mauer was born and raised in the Twin Cities, grew up a Twins fan, and pretty much always wanted to be a Twin. Mauer means more to the Twin Cities, with what he has done, than he would ever be to NYC even if he lead the Yankees to 5 world series titles.

Lee has been around, he doesn't have the familiy/area tie that Mauer has. I hope he stays in Texas, but I'm not expecting it.

It's possible that which ever team (Yankees or Rangers) that signs Cliff Lee will be the best in the AL next year. If the Rangers win the AL this year and make Lee a good enough offer he might stay put.

I do think Lee will end up a Yankee, but I don't think it's a done deal.

Guys, the whole Cliff Lee leaving scenario is a pretty big deal down here and local sports radio and tv has covered the topic quite a bit. Lee is quoted as saying that he just wants to win. I think if the Rangers beat the Yankees and have somewhat of a competitive offer, he strongly consideres staying in Texas.
Obviously, players have said this before and bolted at the first hint of an offer from the Yankees. And you can definately argue he will have a better chance of winning in the long run with the Yankees.
