Yeah...it's going to be real fucking safe over there for the American team, or any team that has been an ally of America

Lets be honest, there is a fair chance that country might be blown to smithereens by the time 2022 rolls around.

I don't know about you, but there's no place I'd rather vacation than triangulated between Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia.
I guess the West Bank and those nice beaches along the Gulf of Aden will have to wait a few more years.
DJH may have a point as well...

By whom? While it might be a terror nightmare for Americans, they are safe as kittens themselves.DJH wrote:Lets be honest, there is a fair chance that country might be blown to smithereens by the time 2022 rolls around.

Re: World Cup 2018 and 2022
Qatar can beat heat and play World Cup in January, Beckenbauer suggests
Legend Franz Beckenbauer called Saturday for the 2022 World Cup to be played in January or February to avoid the oppressive summer heat in Qatar.
The German, who lifted the World Cup as a player and coach, was one of FIFA's 22 executive committee members whose secret ballot Thursday in Zurich controversially awarded the Middle Eastern state the right to host the sport's most prestigious tournament.
World Cups are traditionally held during the northern hemisphere's summer months, when the desert state is at its hottest, with temperatures reaching a scorching 122F (50C).
Qatar's winning bid promised climate control technology would be deployed to keep the temperature on the tournament's fields to 81F (27C).
But Beckenbauer, who will step down from FIFA's executive committee in March, urged the world soccer body to "think about a different solution."
"In January or February you have a comfortable 77F (25C) there," he told German newspaper Bild. "Plans for the biggest leagues would have to change for 2022 but that would not be a major undertaking. It would be an alternative to using climate control at great expense for stadiums and fan zones."

Re: World Cup 2018 and 2022
I'm sure that the EPL, La Liga, Serie A, and everyone else will have no problems shutting down their seasons for up to two months, and letting their players go to play on national teams, right in the middle of their seasons. Sounds like it's an easy thing.EPJr wrote:Qatar can beat heat and play World Cup in January, Beckenbauer suggests

Why move it to January/February when Qatar already promised enclosed air-conditioned stadiums? Wait, you mean they might not deliver on that promise?!?!

The $45 billion they've pledged (and probably have) should cover it.bandl wrote:Why move it to January/February when Qatar already promised enclosed air-conditioned stadiums? Wait, you mean they might not deliver on that promise?!?!
Interesting take on the whole situation:

Re: World Cup 2018 and 2022
Yes and no. He sounds a little like an Obama American apologist. Some of the points are valid (ie to make fun of the size of Qatar is really pointless) but he ignores some other things like the complaints of security issues, the fact that Qatar's team in no way deserves an automatic bid, that Brazil's cup marks only the second WC in the western hemisphere in a 36 year span...Grizalltheway wrote:Interesting take on the whole situation:

Re: World Cup 2018 and 2022
If anything, I think the small size of Qatar adds to the appeal of going there for the WC. You could easily see as many match as you want without forking over a wad of cash and time (ticket prices withstanding) to travel all across the country, like you would have to for the U.S. or Brazil or Russia. Of course, that's about the only thing appealing about Qatar. That and their ease on alcohol consumption in international hotels. YES!!!!!!!!!
