i've got some sources close on this one - looks like there have been conversations with the incoming governor - and the incoming GOP house and senate majorities with the Vikings stadium folks... early conversations have centered around two possible properties - one at an old army ammo plant in the northern suburbs (near gil dobie's house) that has been awaiting development for 20 years... and the other on the metrodome site...

current chatter is that the u of m is actually keen on the idea of having the vikings at TCF for a few years while they tear down the dome - (they could use the rent and revenue) while the league won't be keen on a 50k stadium, they are clearly keen on getting the vikes out of the dome

we'll see what comes of it - but support was growing for some kind of solution before this past weekend - but it appears things are heating up in light of recent events.

It's more because the contract for the dome is up in 2011, and the Vikings want a new stadium. As TwinTown said, the state doesn't want to pay for an open air stadium for 10 events per year. Next year with the CBA, there may not be any games anywhere.

talked to a friend late this afternoon - dayton met with the nfl and wilf's today at the Mpls. Club (where he did serious business during the campaign) - talks went well

the gov-elect is starting to get behind the idea of pushing a fixed roof stadium - the vikings covering 1/3 of costs. word is, he's working to re-frame it as a jobs thing... there is some support from the gop and labor dems for this, but it's going to take the whole session to sort out the particulars.

Looks like repairs are on-hold until March, which takes away a good portion of the Gophers early baseball schedule. Also Twinsfest will have to find a new home this year.

The Metrodome will remain deflated and unusable at least through March, stranding the popular TwinsFest, dislocating shows and leaving several college and high school baseball teams scrambling to find other accommodations.

Bill Lester, executive director of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, said on Wednesday that it's not yet clear when the Dome's ripped roof can be fixed but that it won't happen before spring.

Engineers are busy finding out how many of its 106 panels were irrevocably damaged in the Dec. 11 snowstorm, when snow and ice combined with high winds caused the Dome to deflate. At least nine torn fabric roof panels will need to be replaced, Lester said.

That would be ironic considering how much Minnesota torchered the LA Rams back in the 1970's.

Look up the playoff history between the two. The game was usually in Minnesota, back when the Vikes played outdoors. When the Rams finally got to host the Vikings in the playoffs a freak rainstorm hit LA and the Vikings won.
