Manuel Extended; Utley Surgery?

Post by 93henfan »

Uncle Chollie inked for two more years:

Chase Utley's knee did not respond to a cortisone shot. Some troubling quotes from yesterday:
My goal is to alleviate this as quickly as possible but still keep in mind that I have a career ahead of me.
We're not going to look for the short-term solution. I want to be smart about this and realize that I have 3 years left under this contract to fulfill.

That would be a devastating loss for the Phils because Utley is the toughest out in the Phillies' lineup and, for a good pitcher, the only guy really to fear. Howard is a mistake hitter that a good pitcher should handle. But Utley can hurt you even when you make your pitch. Injuries like this always suck, but I hate to see one of the game's premier players lose a year during his prime.

Yeah, we know you hate it.

This is a tough loss for sure. Losing the 3 and 5 hitters from one year to the next is never good. It's still going to be a tough win for any team against our starters though. Sans Utley, I say we drop back down from the more optimistic predictions into double-digit win territory. Something like 95 wins.

It's strange that weeks into this that the doctors can't come up with a defined prognosis as to A: what the injury actually is - there have been 3 diagnoses I believe to date since camp started and B: what medical course of action they should take
