NC State basketball coach Kay Yow dies at 66

Post by dbackjon »

Hall of Famer and longtime North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow has died after a decades-long fight against breast cancer. She was 66.

The university announced that Yow died on Saturday morning. She had been in the hospital since last week. Yow was first diagnosed with the disease in 1987.

Yow won more than 700 games in a career filled with milestones. She coached the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 1988, won four Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championships, earned 20 NCAA tournament bids and reached the Final Four in 1998.

But for many fans, Yow was best defined by her unwavering resolve while fighting cancer. She raised awareness and money for research, and stayed with her team through much of the debilitating effects of the disease.

We're losing all the good ones....

I'd put Yow, Summitt, Goestenkors, and Murrell all in the Top 10 of basketball coaches of all time at any level, either gender.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

If I'm not mistaken, I heard our PA announcer mention at Saturday's game that she coached at my college for a few seasons...but I can't find anything on it.
