The Throw-In: Who cares how US do it? Just win, baby

Bradley & Co. may not get style points, but they're getting job done
We’ve got crotchety old Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis to thank for that cliché. But a stone’s throw from where the Raiders once played during their 12 years in Los Angeles, the US national team can do something on Saturday that will shut up all the Bob Bradley haters — at least for a little while.
Win. That’s all it takes. Never mind the slow starts, the all-too-frequent uninspiring play from the US and the skin-of-their-teeth results that have come to define the Bradley Era. In one game, anything can happen. And a victory is all the US need against Mexico to win back their CONCACAF crown.

Gold Cup: Chicharito, de Nigris lead Mexico past Honduras

El Tri need ET, but win 2-0 to book third straight US-Mexico final
HOUSTON — Mexico needed goals from Aldo de Nigris and Javier “Chicharito” Hernández in the first half of extra time to defeat a very tough Honduras squad 2-0 on Wednesday night at a sold-out Reliant Stadium. The victory moves Mexico into the Gold Cup final, where they will face archrivals United States on Saturday.
It may have taken 93 minutes, but El Tri finally found a way to defeat a Catrachos team that all night proved a worthy, and at times a superior, opponent.

Fun game. 80% of crowd were Mexico fans. Stradium was maybe 1/3 filled when USA played. Nearly full for Mexico. I'll try to post pics later showing the difference.

I'm going to watch. Even if aren't a big soccer fan the game may be worth watching because the two teams hate each other.
Unlike many sports where free agents can switch teams from one rival to the other, switching form one side to the other doesn't happen international soccer very often.
While it might be cliche to say that the Yankees and Red Sox hate each other, I think the hatred is real in this rivalry.

OK, maybe I missed it, but what channel was the game on last night? I couldn't find it.

Re: 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Yeah I skimmed the ESPN listings and didn't see it. That's about as much effort as I'll put into a soccer game.89Hen wrote:OK, maybe I missed it, but what channel was the game on last night? I couldn't find it.

Very entertaining game - even for this Mexico hater it was fun watching them play and actually not disgrace the field with their diving (heck we were just as bad if not worse in going down as easy as a cheap whore). Great start with the 2 early goals (and the emphatic return of Adu as a world-class and now mature player), but aside from disorganization on Mexico's back line you could tell that they had firm control of the game. Once Cherundulo had to be subbed out it was just a matter of time before our back line got carved up. Add in Tim Howard making an absolute mess of things back there, and 4-2 was the right outcome...
When played right soccer can really be a beautiful game to watch (unlike the boredom created by baseball's 30 seconds between pitches or football's extended TV timeouts)...
Proletarians of the world, unite!
