Cowboys Ring of Honor

Post by SuperHornet »

The Dallas Cowboys have just announced the induction of WR Drew Pearson, OL Larry Allen, and DL Charles Haley into the Cowboys Ring of Honor, the Cowboys equivalent of retiring numbers (though they do not officially do that).

I'm wholeheartedly for this honor for Pearson, who was one-half of one of the best receiving tandems in history with Tony "Thrill" Hill. Haley is pretty good. I'm not so sure about Allen, who I seem to remember as always struggling with his weight.

But there are TWO other Cowboys who deserve this honor but are still left out in the cold. Those would be Pearson's partner in crime Hill and their QB buddy Danny White. One might also think of Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Jim Jeffcoat, Charlie Waters, and Michael Downs on defense and Doug Cosbie on offense. But Hill and D. White absolutely MUST be honored!

As much as I'd love that, this is restricted to those who played for the Dallas Cowboys. If there were ever a combined football hall of fame a la hoops, I'd be the first to nominate Maida.

"Cowboys" and "Honor" in the same thread title. Well isn't that special?

I could see Peason, Hill, Jones, Waters & Jeffcoat. White is the next level down that just misses the cut.

Why? White has a Super Bowl ring, started three straight NFC Championship Games, was the team's all-time leading passer at the time of his retirement, and was probably the best punter in team history. What other Cowboys QB can say the same?

White was a very good player, but I think of ring of honor as elite players. Maybe he is good enough, maybe not, IMO he just misses.

Uh, when someone like clenz or AZ disagrees with me, they generally have something more than just an opinion.

Can you step up to their level of game?

He was soft, lost 3 straight NFC Championship games that the Cowboys were favorites.
Got his Super Bowl ring due to Roger Staubach being the starting QB.
He wasn't that great of a punter either. He looked better than he was because of the rest of the Dallas team.

OK. That's a bit better. But a little bit of digging will prove that wrong.

First of all, no other Cowboy QB started three straight NFC Championship Games because that was the ONLY period in which the Cowboys appeared in three straight. Also, if one looks at those three games, one would easily see that the defense screwed the pooch on two of them (Everson Walls in particular) and the OL screwed up in one by allowing White to be knocked out by an injury.

Also note that Mitch Hoopes, the previous punter, was cut and at least one reason was that he had a punt blocked in the Super Bowl. White never had that happen.

While not directly Cowboy-related, note that White is enshrined in at least TWO different halls of fame. Not many guys can say that.

Staubach started three AFC Title games from 1971-1973 and Aikman started in 4 consecutive NFC TItle games from 1992-1995.

Danny White only punted in one Super Bowl!

Besides, as far as Dallas QBs go, the talk stops at Aikman and Staubach and continues no further. There is no quarterback in Dallas history that can possibly claim to be "Dallas's best QB." It's not even arguable so don't even try. There was a giant gap between Staubach and Aikman where the Cowboys totally blew.. completely off the radar.. Aikman, Emmitt, and Irvin brought them back to the spotlight.

White's Super Bowl ring is about as meaningful as the third string safety's ring.. he didn't lead them to a Super Bowl victory. Hell, Keyshawn Johnson has a Super Bowl ring!

I would also put Dandy Don Meredith over White.

No Gary Hogeboom?

edit: I'd actually say the gap between Aikman and Romo (who I'm still not sold on) is worse, even though it's a shorter time period. They had sucky teams from 86 to 91 (when they made the playoffs again)
