Dave Concepcion was a steady and valuable component of the Big Red Machine. Not quite HOF caliber but a very good player.

Obviously the Reds thought it was appropriate and his Reds HOF teammates Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez and his HOF manager Sparky Anderson obviously support it. What's your point?

I think we're a little "retiring the jersey" happy, that's all. What about George Foster?

Yeah, maybe the retiring the jersey/number thing happens too often - I don't know. In this case, to me, anyway, it's just the Reds saying thanks to Concepcion for playing 19 years for them and being a part of a lot of the success the franchise has had on the field. The ESPN article said he's only the 8th Red to have his number retired and the Reds are baseball's oldest franchise, if I remember correctly.

In his comments in the ESPN article, Morgan also mentioned Foster, Ken Griffey Sr., and Lee May as other members of the Reds teams of that era who have not gotten their "due", as he put it. I don't know how the Reds decided on Concepcion and not those other guys. Maybe because all those other guys played for other teams and Concepcion was a career-long Red.
