Padres literally steal game from Dodgers

Post by SuperHornet »

Down 6-5 in the top of the 9th, Padres pinch-runner Everth Cabrera stole home, immediately follwed by right fielder Will Venable when the pitch from closer Kenley Jansen sailed over catcher A.J. Ellis' head and went to the backstop. Initially, the plate umpire called Cabrera for the third out despite the fact that the entire crowd at Chavez Ravine saw the ball at the backstop. He corrected himself just as Venable slid across the dish in front of Jansen's attempted tag.

A double steal of home? Well, not officially, as Jansen was charged with a throwing error (should have been a wild pitch, in my book). But close enough for government work. What a way to win a game!

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
