Grandpa sets age-group world record

Post by SuperHornet »

Charlie Rice, who lives near Sac-Town, set a new age-group mark in the bench press on Saturday, hoisting 257 pounds to obliterate the previous record by 65 pounds. Dude is 85 years old. Rice will represent the USA at the world championships at Lost Wages in November.

He certainly kicks my shell. My PR while playing (or, rather TRYING to play) college football was "only" 250, and I couldn't get anywhere near that now.

WTG, Charlie!

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I hope this isn't too much of a douche-baggy thing to do, but here's a link to a video of me putting up 405 in the bench back in may...I turn 50 in a few months...I've gone through periods of working out a lot, and then slacking off...I'd generally work up to doing reps with 315, but hadn't lifted anything heavier than 315 in probably 20 years...for grins, I figured I'd see how high I could go...

I doubled with 405 a few minutes before this, but hadn't had the presence of mind to whip out the iPhone before the attempt, so I came back and did this one after a short rest...

I'm thinking that my goal now is to see if I can't hit 500 before I hit 51....but, I'm thinking the connective tissue won't hold up at this age...
