Shannon Szabados, who goaltended the Canadian Women's National Hockey Team to gold at Sochi, has signed a contract to run the net for the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League for the remainder of the season.
This isn't a first for Szabados. She practiced with the Edmonton Oilers just last week, when they were shorthanded in the aftermath of a trade. Szabados has also played in the boys' juniors leagues. She is following in the proud line of Canadian women who have played against men, such as Manon Rheaume, who played for Tampa Bay and St. Louis.
Szabados will be introduced to the home fans before their next scheduled home game on Thursday.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
