Robinson's uniform was retired by all teams in MLB!!!! Only he and Wayne Gretkzy who had his uniform number retired by NHL can make that claim.Gil Dobie wrote:In my post, I stated his number is retired by only 1 team. That was a mistake, his number is retired by 2 teams.dal4018 wrote: Who is Rodney and is his number retired by baseball like Jackie's forever!!!!!
He retired with 7 batting titles. Rodney Cline Carew was a great at stealing home like Jackie. I see him walking around at many Twins functions. Looks like he could still play.

I agree he did not deserve the abuse that he took as a player there were other players in the negro leagues that were far more talented than he was but they were much older.CAA Flagship wrote:Do you realize why his number is the only one retired by baseball? It's not because he was the best.dal4018 wrote: Who is Rodney and is his number retired by baseball like Jackie's forever!!!!!
He didn't deserve the abuse as a player, and he didn't deserve his number being retired. It was nothing more than an over-correction for earlier wrongs. Honestly, you should be ashamed for taking the handout.

I agree Super Hornet other black players took abuse like Jackie but are completely forgotten in historical lore and Larry Doby was one of them.I think a movie should be done on him like it was for Robinson. And good point on the football players they dealt with the issue of race as well as black guys in baseball. Also football was Robinson's true love not baseball.I would love to see a film done on those black guys playing in the NFL during its early years that never got the chance to display their talent.Their being removed being from the NFL made it possible for guys like Sam Baugh,Don Hutson to have the spotlight all to themselves.People don't realize that Paul Robeson who was a actor, civil rights activist, singer played in the NFL during its early years he was the forerunner for all guys playing the position of Tight End.SuperHornet wrote:I still don't understand why Robinson gets all this love and Larry Doby is practically ignored. They started in MLB the same season.
Plus, if one wants to talk about "breaking the color barrier," Kenny Washington and Woody Strode (Rams, NFL) and Bill Willis and Marion Motley (Browns, AAFC) did it A YEAR BEFORE ROBINSON EVEN SIGNED.
Why are these guys forgotten and Doby crapped on while Robinson gets all the glory? They had to endure racist crap, too....

I am well aware of that fact dal, I was just saying Rod Carew was also a great stealer of home. One of my friends is a big collector of Jackie Robinson memorabilia, maybe one of the best collections in the country. He has offered to let the Twins display part of his collection. He was somewhat disappointed about the movie, as it went hollywood a few times with the facts. I've also been to Jackie Robinson Field, have you?dal4018 wrote:Gil Dobie wrote:

Re: Jackie steals home!!!!
Some History behind the ballpark from wiki
The inclusion of Robinson on the team also led the Dodgers to move its spring training site. Prior to 1946, the Dodgers held their spring training in Jacksonville, Florida. However, the city's stadium refused to host an exhibition game with the Montreal Royals – the Dodgers’ own farm club – on whose roster Robinson appeared at the time, citing segregation laws. Nearby Sanford similarly declined. Ultimately, City Island Ballpark in Daytona Beach agreed to host the game with Robinson on the field. The team would travel to Havana, Cuba for spring training in 1947, this time with Robinson on the big club. Although the Dodgers ultimately built Dodgertown and its Holman Stadium further south in Vero Beach, and played there for 61 spring training seasons from 1948 through 2008, Daytona Beach would rename City Island Ballpark to Jackie Robinson Ballpark in his honor.
