Italy's Massimo Stano won the Olympic men's 20km race walk on Thursday, pulling ahead of the pack in the final stages to claim his country's third gold medal in the event.

:tothehand: Anyone can walk 20k. The 50k was the, and i'll quote the commentators, " the most exciting action we've seen in a long time."

Nearly 4 hours, at a avg pace of 7:42 mi/minute of speed walking, yellow cards, red cards, cramps, Poles and Germans jockeying for position. Will he or won't he - the Canadian Crusader sashaying his way up the leaderboard to get the bronze. The race for Silver and Bronze was a nail biter for sure between Germany and Canada. 12 DNF, 2 men disqualified! FROM WALKING! The 46 year old Portuguese walker who is, "the greatest walking athlete of all time," finishing in a demoralizing 5th place finish. The Ecuadorian who finished nearly an hour after later. The Japanese man who nearly quit with about 5k to go...but threw his hat down and fought his way back from nearly P20 to finish in 6th - we haven't seen that much steadfast determination to win since the Pacific Campaign in 1945.

The Men's 50km Race Walk was nonstop excitement, drama, suspense and enjoyment from start to finish.

How could you have nearly 4 hours of "nonstop excitement, drama, suspense and enjoyment"?

By watching grown men, with their hips swaying side to side, speed walk while the commentators make everything more dramatic than it really is.

American Katie Nageotte, a former NCAA D-II national champion, overcame a tight quad that almost caused her to no-height to stave off a furious assault from Soviet pole vaulter Anzhelika Sidorova and British vaulter Holly Bradshaw to win the Tokyo Gold with a jump of 16'1". Sidorova won silver, and Bradshaw claimed bronze.

Nageotte is the third American to win gold in this event, following Jenn Suhr at London in 2012, and Auburn, CA's own Stacy Dragila, who won the inaugural gold at Sidney in 2000. (Semi-interesting OT history trivia: the pit on which Dragila won the 2000 US Championship while preparing for Sidney found new life on the runway at Don Womble Track and Field at Lodi Union High School West Campus [my alma mater and where I still coach pole vault) until the track was resurfaced with a new all-weather surface to replace our dirt track).]

Congratulations, Katie!

That sounds like what happened with David Taylor, the US dude who pulled a takedown on legendary Iranian wrestler Hassan Yazdani in the last 15 seconds with a torn singlet to go ahead 4-3 in the 190 lb weight class. Apparently, Taylor has a history of this sort of thing, to the point of being nicknamed the "Magic Man."

Same boat. I'll claim victory for the US with total medals, but want the gold total count as well.

We know that if we curb-stomp the Chinese in total medals but lose the golds by a few, Xi ChunKing will crow about the latter and ignore the former.
