Heck, I'd personally go and stoke on the riots if that meant that the World Cup would come here. With it in Brazil next year, Russia after that, and Qatar of all places after that, my kids will be all grown up by the next chance to see a home World Cup. Next year would be perfect. Go riots!!!! (as long as no one gets hurt).

Ghana stands in the way again of another USMNT advancing at its World Cup. This time it's the U20s in Turkey. Ghana, Ghana, Ghana. Always Ghana.

Re: US SOCCER
2013 USMNT Gold Cup roster announced
GOALKEEPERS (3) : Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)
DEFENDERS (8) : Corey Ashe (Houston Dynamo), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Oguchi Onyewu (Malaga), Michael Orozco Fiscal (Puebla), Michael Parkhurst (FC Augsburg)
MIDFIELDERS (7) : Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Helsinborg), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Joshua Gatt (Molde FK), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Jose Torres (Tigres)
FORWARDS (5) : Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Herculez Gomez (Club Tijuana), Jack McInerney (Philadelphia Union), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)
No Carols Bocanegra. Feel sorry for the due because he's meant so much but I do think his time has passed. Nice to see Gooch get another try but I too think his time has passed.

Ghana has some of the best young soccer talent on the globe and it showed today in the FIFA Under 20 match vs Uncle Sam.Ghana smoked the USA 4-1.I personally can't wait for the World Cup next yr.Ghana should advance to finals and bring home championship trophy.MSUDuo wrote:Ghana stands in the way again of another USMNT advancing at its World Cup. Ghana has been knocking on the door for the past couple of years but poor officiating has kept them put of the finals. They always have some of the best young talent in soccer.I say this is the year they finally kick in the door to the big show.GannonFan wrote:Uh, okay.dal4018 wrote: Ghana has some of the best young soccer talent on the globe and it showed today in the FIFA Under 20 match vs Uncle Sam.Ghana smoked the USA 4-1.I personally can't wait for the World Cup next yr.Ghana should advance to finals and bring home championship trophy.(to clarify, I don't disagree that Ghana is pretty good, but they have no chance in hell of winning the World Cup in Brazil. Making the semis would be a huge accomplishment).

How did poor officiating keep Ghana out of the semis last WC? They missed a PK when a red card handball was called on Suarez and then lost 4-2 in PKs?dal4018 wrote:Ghana has been knocking on the door for the past couple of years but poor officiating has kept them put of the finals. They always have some of the best young talent in soccer.I say this is the year they finally kick in the door to the big show.GannonFan wrote:

In the yr '06 a close friend who is a native of that country showed me a article in which the writer talked about how poor officiating cost Ghana a chance at the finals.I still say next yr they will make the finals.tribe_pride wrote:How did poor officiating keep Ghana out of the semis last WC? Re: US SOCCER
This can't be real.
They got beat 3-0 in the Round of 16 in 2006. No where near the finals and not because of the refs.
The USA had a beef with refs in 2002 and even then we don't know how the game would've ended had the handball been called. At least that was in the Quarterfinals...

Re: US SOCCER
To be fair, no one expected South Korea, Turkey, or Croatia to make the semifinals either. At some point an African nation will make it.
Also, Ghana may not make the WC. They need to beat or tie Zambia on Sept. 6, a team that's already beaten them in their group, to make the final round of CAF qualifying. If Zambia wins, Ghana's out.
So far only the AFC has finished, with the qualifying nations being Japan, South Korea, Iran, and Australia.
Uzbekistan and Jordan will play each other with the winner going to the intercontinental playoffs.

I have heard plenty of horror stories in which refs had to be escorted to their pov's if they made calls that went against the home team!!!GannonFan wrote:Heck, I'd personally go and stoke on the riots if that meant that the World Cup would come here. Re: US SOCCER
I was going to mention that about Ghana but they should make it. They are at home against Zambia (although Zambia won their home match against Ghana). I am sure Zambia will be pushing hard but would favor Ghana to at least tie this match and advance in their home and home series since they should be favored against whoever they play against.∞∞∞ wrote:To be fair, no one expected South Korea, Turkey, or Croatia to make the semifinals either. Re: US SOCCER
Israel is currently in 3rd place of Group F in UEFA qualifications. There are nine groups and the winner of each qualifies. Then the eight best 2nd place teams will play a one legged-playoff and the four that win will also qualify for the WC. This is what UEFA qualifying currently looks like:dal4018 wrote:Curious question has Israel qualified for WC this yr if so what group??∞∞∞ wrote:To be fair, no one expected South Korea, Turkey, or Croatia to make the semifinals either. Israel has only made the World Cup once in 1970. Likely won't make it this year.

There wouldn't be any fireworks. At the Olympics, Iranian athletes forfeit rather than compete directly against Israeli athletes. I suspect they'd do the same thing at the World Cup.dal4018 wrote:Maybe Israel will break the 4 decade streak???Too bad that Iran&Israel are not in the same group!! There is a reason that Israeli athletic teams are grouped in European competition rather than Asian or African competition.

Gold Cup starts tonight for the USA. I'm fully expecting Belize to bunker and not expecting a score above 2-0.

Interesting Group A of the Gold Cup on Sunday with Mexico losing to Panama and Martinique (a country that cannot qualify for the World Cup) beating Canada on a last minute goal. Hopefully the US does not fall into that trap.
Why does it have to be an 11:00 game?

The stadium was hosting a double header and I assume they needed time to transition between games. Started at 8:00 WC(b) time.tribe_pride wrote:Interesting Group A of the Gold Cup on Sunday with Mexico losing to Panama and Martinique (a country that cannot qualify for the World Cup) beating Canada on a last minute goal.
