That's the kicker in this. Why can the ground cause an incompletion but not a fumble?
Because you have to control the ball through the completion of the catch to establish possession.

It was still part of the act of catching the ball in this instance.
No. He made a football move and was lunging for the goal line.

How? He took three steps after catching it,had clear control of the ball, and dove towards the end zone.

Ask the rules committee. The refs enforced the rule as it's written.

He was stumbling backwards trying to possess the ball... :coffee:

The rule isn't based on # of steps, it's based on completing the catch...under the rules.

The ball never moved until he hit the ground...after having gotten two feet (three actually) in bounds...

That's possession followed by ground causing a fumble

Enjoy being a pretentious, worthless human being your whole life. Which bandwagon you going to hop on next, NDSU? It's not like UNI will ever win a NC. :coffee:
Still waiting to hear which bandwagon I'm on.

Twins?
Vikings?
UNI?
Tottenham?
Other?
I don't know, which one did you decide on? You said you were leaning towards the Packers, but I think you had your eyes set on a couple AFC teams too.

Give it a fucking rest SE.

Anyone else think Manning is having trouble throwing the ball down the field? He can't seem to get much going.

Other than the INT, Luck has looked much better so far. Consider this the official changing of the guard. :coffee:

I don't like the way the rule is written but the refs ruled correctly based on how it is written. If you catch the ball as you are going down (even if you take 2 or 3 steps), you still have to make the football move for the ball to be considered caught if the ground jars it loose.

Bryant caught the ball at the high point. Shields knocked it out of his hands after that, then Bryant regained control but that cost him his 1st step ...IMO that made the difference.

Personally, I don't think the "going to the ground" rule applies because Bryant took THREE steps in moving toward the goal line. Accepting that it DOES apply only makes the situation worse for the NFL because the ball never touched the ground. The impact in the area of the ball was strictly on the ARM, NOT the ball. The ball went straight into the air; it did NOT strike the ground. No pass is incomplete until the ball touches the ground. Bryant actually re-caught the ball. And where was he when he re-caught it? Oh, yeah, he was on his back IN THE END ZONE.

So either way you wanna take that play, the zebras robbed the Cowboys of the game-winning touchdown. Dean Blandino is a freaking idiot....

I don't disagree the rule was interpreted correctly, i disagree with the rule.

Technically there should never be a fumble on a pass play by this rule, and 93s opinion. After all, it doesn't matter if you run 50 yards while grabbing your nuts and spinning circles. the ball came out when you hit the ground. Incomplete

CBS ref analysis says the punt returner had to show a football move in order to show he had possession prior to the fumble. WTF? :?

*I am referring to the Colts - Broncos game.

Crumbling to the ground in the fetal position is not a football move?

Apparently not, even though he was clearly down with possession. Fumble should have stood no?
