Great game by Howard and Gonzalez played well in the back as a first time starter.
Did enough to advance in the 3 games. That is all that matters.

It is funny. Reverse the three games and everyone in the US would be on top of the world.tribe_pride wrote:Did enough to advance in the 3 games. That is all that matters.

Serious question: I peeked in to our conference room to see if there was a score. Two players collided, was that one guy actually crying on the field?

Hockey, by far. You can almost win the Stanley Cup with a red hot goalie and he can stop almost everything. In soccer, the keeper just can't stop everything. Definitely more of an impact in hockey, though.CAA Flagship wrote:Question for soccer fans:

FYI, Belgium beat us 4-2 last summer in a friendly.

Re: US SOCCER
Belgium is actually pretty big and physical. Might have the best keeper in the world in net as well. And they beat us 4-2 last year in a game in Cleveland (really, they played in Cleveland - apparently we hate the Belgians, making them come all the way over here to play and then sticking them in Cleveland. Although we don't hate them completely, otherwise the game would be in Detroit). And the Belgians have a "golden generation" of sorts - i.e. a small country but with an oversized number of really good players at the same time. I think they have at least 10 players in the EPL, whereas we have like 2 or 3 (and less than that now that Dempsey is playing stateside). Belgium is the dark horse team that could come in and win the whole thing.MSUDuo wrote:They're good. We're good. They've never performed well at a major tournament93henfan wrote:Is Belgium any good?

Good game for us though. If we're going to lose at some point, I'd rather lose to a good team that get knocked out by Algeria or somebody like that. Of course, Belgium is beatable, though, so who knows.

Of course, that is what I figured. But the US coach was interviewed after the game and was asked about Howard. He was saying that Howard is great and that a good goalie was so important in soccer.GannonFan wrote:Hockey, by far. Howard did have one great save. Other than that, it seemed pretty pedestrian. I don't think the Kraut goalie put down his cigarette once.

Belgians. Those are the people who built the roads for the blitzkrieg, no?

Re: US SOCCER
Well, the difference in a soccer goalie versus a hockey goalie is that the soccer goalie is the QB for the defense - he's calling out stuff and organizing where the defense goes. That's where the importance lies - he sets up everything. A keeper is pretty important in soccer, but it doesn't approach the level that it is in hockey. And I'm fine with that - there's been cases where a pretty predestrian team in hockey goes deep in the playoffs just because you can't score on the goalie.CAA Flagship wrote:Of course, that is what I figured. And Howard's good because you rarely see a gaffe on his part. Ask Spain about the importance of a goalie in soccer as they fly home after the group stage because their keeper stunk.

Freakin' Montgomery taking all that gas away from Patton just to dither around in Belgium. Made for a nice movie, though.

As a Devils fan, and Brodeur fan, I have seen great defenses that made Marty look good. The Devils won many games where the opponent had less than 20 shots. Marty was good, but that defense made him look better with the neutral zone trap.
