PPL Park in Chester could expand for Villanova football
Image

While the Big East continues its fact-finding about Villanova football possibly joining the conference, the likely venue for the Wildcats could be expanding.

Union CEO and managing partner Nick Sakiewicz told the Daily News yesterday that increasing the capacity of PPL Park always has been a possibility, no matter what Villanova does.

"Villanova could feasibly accelerate those plans as another tenant in the building."

All systems go for Portland's JELD-WEN debut
Image
Franchise looking for first MLS win as Timbers fever grips town

PORTLAND, Ore. – JELD-WEN Field made a spectacular first impression on members of the Portland media, the team and other guests assembled Tuesday for a luncheon at the refurbished stadium.

Work crews attended to some of the final details while the small gathered crowd took in the bright green expanse of turf and the gleaming new features of the stadium, including the KeyBank Club Level.

Excitement for the Timbers’ arrival as an MLS franchise is probably higher this week than it was for the season-opener at Colorado. On Thursday night, the Timbers and their fans will usher in a new era for the city.

“For me, it means we’re realizing the potential of the game in this city,” said technical director and general manager Gavin Wilkinson, who came to Portland 10 years ago as a player.

Take a look inside JELD-WEN Field: http://pgepark.io-media.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

JELD-WEN Field features a new east-side grandstand, new locker-room facilities and wide range of renovations and upgrades. It is the latest in a series of improvements to an athletic field that has been a gathering place in the city for almost 120 years.

“Thursday can’t come soon enough, because I know everybody’s excited about it,” said midfielder Jeremy Hall. “We just want to get a win. That’s the most important thing right now. We want to show that we’re going to be a tough team to beat his year, especially at home.”

Houston beat deadline with Koke, Watson deals

Dynamo say Spanish attacker not DP; Jamaican brings MF depth

HOUSTON – Despite working on tight time schedule, the Houston Dynamo were able to beat the clock and make a last-minute splash in the MLS spring transfer window.

The Dynamo announced two transfer deadline-day deals on Friday for Spanish forward Sergio “Koke” Contreras and Jamaican international midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson.

“We’re excited,” said Dynamo president of business operations Chris Canetti. "We knew we needed to make some moves and that was our desire to get it done before the transfer window."

New England claim US international Feilhaber
Image
MF falls to Revs after Chivas, Philly pass;
NE have no comment

The New England Revolution have claimed US national-teamer Benny Feilhaber, Major League Soccer announced on Tuesday night.

The World Cup veteran fell to the Revs after Chivas USA and Philadelphia both declined their options to claim him per the league's allocation order for incoming US internationals.

New England now must decide whether to keep Feilhaber or trade him. The club declined to comment when contacted by MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday night.

A UCLA product, Feilhaber signed with MLS last Friday after spending three seasons with Danish Superliga side AGF Aarhus. Per the league’s allocation order, Chivas USA had the first option to acquire the midfielder.

However, the player’s salary was the prime concern for the Goats, who will keep the top spot in the allocation order. Philadelphia retain the No. 2 spot.

FOX Soccer is about to up the ante on its commitment to Major League Soccer.

Los Angeles to host league championship for record fifth time

NEW YORK — MLS Cup is headed back to Tinseltown.

For a record fourth time, the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., will play host to Major League Soccer’s championship match this fall, the league announced on Tuesday.

Chicago Fire part ways with head coach de los Cobos

Technical director, Fire legend Klopas to take reins in Chicago

The Chicago Fire have parted ways with head coach Carlos de los Cobos, the club announced Monday evening.

Frank Klopas, the team’s technical director since January of 2008, will serve as de los Cobos’ replacement on an interim basis. Klopas, a former Fire player who was inducted into the “Ring of Fire” in 2004, is expected to be on the bench when Chicago host Seattle on Saturday (8:30 pm ET, watch LIVE online).

“Since the Fire has elected to move in a new direction with its coaching staff midseason, we wanted to ensure a seamless transition by naming Frank Klopas interim head coach,” managing director Javier León said in a statement. “Frank's wealth of knowledge and experience as a player, scout, technical director and coach provide an extraordinary background for him to manage the team successfully as we work towards a MLS Cup playoff spot.”

Red Bulls deal De Rosario to DC for McCarty in stunner
Image
Conference rivals exchange midfielders in surprise trade

NEW YORK — The New York Red Bulls abruptly parted ways with veteran Dwayne De Rosario on Monday, dealing the five-time MLS Best XI selection to rivals D.C. United for midfielder Dax McCarty.

De Rosario was traded to New York from Toronto FC on April 1 to fill the Red Bulls’ missing playmaker role, but he failed to mirror the offensive numbers he’d amassed in years past for Houston and Toronto FC.

Although not necessarily relied upon for the same offensive output as in years past — Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry is tied for the league lead with eight goals and Luke Rodgers has five this season — De Rosario has struggled to make an impression on a team where he’s not the main attacking option.
