Free Beer Movement's founder, Dan Wiersema,
lists his top summertime soccer brews

Supporters from coast to coast are veterans when it comes to breaking out the grills, popping tents and cracking a few cold ones before a match. And as the MLS season works its way into the hot summer months, there are few things more refreshing than enjoying a beer with your fellow fans.

Dan Wiersema, founder of The Free Beer Movement, provides his sudsy suggestions for MLS fans to enjoy wherever they're supporting their teams — from the parking lot to the pub. Note: All of these are American beers and most are available nationwide.

Best XI: The top American players in MLS
Image
On July 4, here's the best American talent in the league

As we celebrate Independence Day this 4th of July, the MLSsoccer.com editorial staff took a look around the league at the best American talent MLS currently has to offer. Call it the MLS All-American Best XI if you like; we call it a really good dream team.

Goalkeeper
Nick Rimando, Real Salt Lake
With more than 10 years of MLS experience under his belt –not to mention a pair of MLS Cups--, the 32 year-old Real Salt Lake ‘keeper is at the height of his powers. Standing at only 5-foot-10 he may not be the biggest American keeper currently in MLS, but his intelligence, quick-reactions and leadership make him the best.

Defenders
Heath Pearce, Chivas USA
Since joining MLS in 2009 after four years plying his trade in Europe, Pearce has become the premier left back in the league. Possessing the ability to both lock down an attacker and whip pinpoint crosses from the wing, he’s been capped by the USMNT 32 times.

Tim Ream, New York Red Bulls
Billed by some as the USMNT centerback of the future, Ream came into MLS in 2010 as an unheralded 2nd round pick in the SuperDraft. His composure on the ball earned him a starting role in all 30 league matches that year and six caps with the US team since November.

Omar Gonzalez, LA Galaxy
At 6-foot-5, the LA Galaxy centerback has size for days and isn’t afraid to use it. He intimidates opponents on the ground and owns them in the air. The latter has been crucial on set pieces and has seen him score four goals in the offensive half of the field. Gonzalez was the 2009 MLS Rookie of the Year.

Sean Franklin, LA Galaxy
Selected 4th in the 2008 SuperDraft by the LA Galaxy, Franklin adapted quickly to MLS, providing LA with a combination of toughness and technique at right back. After being awarded the 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year Award, he missed most of 2009 due to injury. He regained his form in 2010, however, and earned his first US cap in 2011.

Midfielders
Brek Shea, FC Dallas
With a knack for both flashy play and hair, the 2nd overall pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft recalls a young Clint Mathis at times. A versatile speedster and deft passer of the ball, Shea has seen some time as both a defender and a striker, but it’s on the wing where he excels. He’s adept at striking the ball, notching eight goals so far this season.

Kyle Beckerman, Real Salt Lake
The dread-locked defensive midfielder and team captain is as hard-nosed as they come, providing a shield for the vaunted Real Salt Lake defense. His ability to get into the attack by distributing balls from deep positions helped to make him an MLS All-Star in 2009 and 2010, and to help earn RSL an MLS Cup in 2009.

Benny Feilhaber, New England Revolution
A recent arrival to the league, Feilhaber’s abilities as a playmaker have had an immediate impact on the Revolution attack. A stylish orchestrator, Feilhaber is the owner of 38 caps with the USMNT.

Landon Donovan, LA Galaxy
Where to begin with the greatest American player ever produced? How about a list of accolades: 7-time Honda Player of the Year, 4-time MLS Best XI, 4-time U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year, 3-time MLS Cup winner, 3-time CONCACAF Best XI, 2009 MLS MVP, 2008 MLS Golden Boot winner and 2003 MLS Cup MVP. And there’s likely more to come.

Forwards
Juan Agudelo, New York Red Bulls
America’s next great hope at striker seemingly has it all: speed, skill, size and confidence. A product of the Red Bull academy, Agudelo joined the first team in 2010 and saw his first action last October. He earned his first cap with the US team little more than a month later, scoring his first international goal and becoming the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history at the age of 17.

Charlie Davies, D.C. United
The feelgood soccer-story of spring 2011. The one-time USMNT striker is full of skill and guile but is still working his way back to his peak condition. But even with his once-blinding speed reduced to simply scorching, he’s still a handful for defenders. Although aided by a few PKs, his current position in a tie for first in the 2011 Golden Boot Race is a testament to his talent

Fergie sees MLS growth

Red Devils boss believes game on the up in States

Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson has a great appreciation for soccer in the United States. He is very familiar with its growth but is also very aware of the logistical challenges posed by the size of the country.

Here’s his solution that is sure to spark debate among MLS fans: “In Brazil, they have two leagues. They could easily do that in the United States. … In fact, you could have four leagues because of the size of the country and the population base. There are unbelievable possibilities for the United States.”

"The time table for construction will be slightly modified. The new Saputo Stadium will be ready for the beginning of the 2012 summer, rather than in the spring. The Impact will then play a limited number of games at Olympic Stadium, including the home opener.

"We had the option to start the season on the road or to look for an alternative,” added Joey Saputo. “We prefer to play a few matches at Olympic Stadium. We want all games to be an event, especially our first game in MLS in Montreal.”

The club also confirmed that season ticket holders will receive preferential treatment at Olympic Stadium. All season ticket holders will get equivalent seats to their usual seats. "

UPDATE ON THE MTL TECHNICAL PLAN FOR MLS 2012
Image
  • The team’s number one priority for the moment remains the hiring of a new head coach. Nick De Santis said clearly, “Starting from the time that we hire a new head coach, the final processes for player recruitment and the evaluation of technical personnel and the team will be in full motion. We want to make sure that everyone from the technical team is on the same page.”
  • Two days following the presentation of the MLS Cup, the Montreal Impact will hold an expansion draft. Each team from the MLS will have to present a list of 11 protected players. The Impact will be allowed to pick a total of 10 players from unprotected lists of the 18 other teams in the league. De Santis and Jordan have watched many MLS games and have made weekly reports in preparation for the draft.
  • The 2012 MLS SuperDraft of college players, set for Kansas City in January 2012, will see the Impact make the first overall pick, as well as the first pick in each of the following rounds.
  • The salary cap is expected to be $2.81 million for next season. The team will be made up of 30 players. The salary cap covers the first 20 players, and the remaining 10 are considered part of the reserve-team. The Impact could negotiate with players and agents, but all contracts must be signed through the MLS league office

Beast Master Class

First-half beauty by Lindpere leads Bulls past French powerhouse

New York Red Bulls 1
Paris Saint Germain 0

-- The New York Red Bulls won their opening game of the 2011 Emirates Cup with a 1-0 win over French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.

The game’s only goal came from New York midfielder Joel Lindpere, who slotted home after a great through ball from forward Juan Agudelo.

The Red Bulls side put in a solid defensive display as a new look PSG put them under intense pressure, especially late on in the second half as they searched for an equalizer.

But marshaled by stand-in captain Tim Ream — Thierry Henry and Rafael Márquez were both rested ahead of Sunday’s match-up with Arsenal — the New York defense rarely looked flustered as they completed an impressive start to their Emirates Cup campaign

THE MONTREAL IMPACT UNVEILS ITS NEW LOGO
Image
MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact unveiled its new logo, Saturday at Saputo Stadium, making another step towards its entry into Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2012.

Eight elements form the new Montreal Impact logo:

Blue: The team’s predominant colour since its inaugural season in 1993. Refers to the colour of the provincial flag and represents Quebec. It also represents the Saint-Lawrence River, surrounding the island of Montreal.

Four stars: The four stars represent the four original settlers of Montreal as illustrated on the flag of the city: the French, the English, the Irish and the Scots.

Fleur de lys: The official emblem of Quebec found on the provincial flag and historically a symbol of the French monarchy. The fleur de lys was also used by explorer Jacques Cartier when he first sailed to America in 1534. It represents the unique francophone character of the province.

Black and blue stripes: The black and blue stripes refer to the club’s first years, especially the year the club won its first championship in 1994.

Scarf and upward slant in the team’s name: The scarf with the club’s name represents our supporters. The upward slant symbolizes the team’s steady growth and progression over the years, and its evolution in Major League Soccer. It is also a symbol of continuity, as it hints back to the Montreal Impact’s inaugural logo in 1993, as well as the 2002 version that had a predominantly upward slant.

Tous pour gagner: The team’s new motto which refers to the importance of unity for victory. Also reminds us that the club is the sum of relentless efforts from players, staff, partners and supporters who make this organization a great success.

The shield: The traditional shield shape of the logo is consistent with the shape of soccer logos around the world. It is also a derivative of the City of Montreal’s shield.

Silver: The silver used in the logo represents the silver background used in Montreal’s coat of arms

Teenagers prove MLS youth is served in Week 21
Image
Five players under 20 years old find the back of the net in Wk. 21

It certainly smells like teen spirit these days in Major League Soccer.

OK, so the teenage stars who lit up the scoreboards over the weekend might be too young to get that Nirvana reference, but there's no denying that now is as good a time as any to be young and talented in MLS. With the production levels of teams’ Home Grown and academy players soaring, the performances of youngsters like these may just be the difference between a playoff side and one on the outside looking in.
Or
they could just offer a glimpse into the future of MLS, ready to send their own fans into a frenzy.

Diego Fagundez (New England Revolution):
The 16-year-old (above) had a debut to remember. Albeit in a loss, the Home Grown signee came on as a substitute against Chivas USA and became an instant contributor. The Uruguayan forward drew a penalty just two minutes after his entrance and cut the Revs’ deficit in half, then notched a goal of his own in the 85th minute. The Revolution can only hope that it is the first of many. Watch Fagundez score here.

Luis Gil (Real Salt Lake):
The Under-20 US national team member tallied his first career MLS goal against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday and paced Real Salt Lake to a 3-0 home win. The 17-year-old beat Red Bulls goalkeeper Frank Rost just before halftime and doubled RSL’s advantage heading into the break. New York couldn't recover, and the Southern Californian was subbed off in the 67th minute after a brilliant performance. Watch Gil score here.

Orr Barouch (Chicago Fire):
Chicago fell 4-2 to Vancouver on Sunday, but an 80th-minute strike from 19-year-old Barouch gave the Fire something positive to take with them back to the Windy City. It was the second goal of the season in league play for the Israeli forward, who came on as a substitute in the 56th minute for the newly-acquired Sebastián Grazzini. It has been a promising campaign so far for Barouch, who also found the back of the net twice in last month’s US Open Cup quarterfinal win over the New York Red Bulls. Watch Barouch score here.

Gershon Koffie (Vancouver Whitecaps):
Koffie countered Barouch’s tally with a goal of his own for the Whitecaps. The Ghanaian forward gave the ‘Caps a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute off a feed from Eric Hassli for his first career MLS goal. The 19-year-old has been a staple in Vancouver’s midfield, starting 17 of the club’s 23 games, and was finally rewarded with his name in the stat sheet. Watch Koffie score here.

Jack McInerney (Philadelphia Union):
The 19-year-old Generation Adidas signee put the Union on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute of their 1-1 draw at home against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday. It was the first time McInerney had found the back of the net this season, after hammering home three goals last year. The Georgia native made the most of his first action with the senior team in nearly a month, getting the start and going 66 minutes to help earn Philadelphia a point at PPL Park. Watch McInerney score here.

MLS, NBC announce three-year broadcast deal
Image
45 MLS and 4 USMNT matches to appear on NBC and new NBC Sports Network

NEW YORK — Major League Soccer and the NBC Sports Group today announced a three-year media rights agreement, which commences at the start of the 2012 MLS season. The partnership calls for 45 MLS games and four US men’s national team contests to be televised live across both NBC and NBC Sports Network each season. This marks the first rights deal for the newly named cable channel that will be re-branded from VERSUS on January 2, 2012. The announcement was made today by MLS Commissioner and Soccer United Marketing CEO Don Garber and Mark Lazarus, Chairman, NBC Sports Group.

“Everyone at the NBC Sports Group is thrilled to begin this partnership with Major League Soccer,” said Lazarus. “MLS is a perfect fit for our new group, and we are uniquely positioned to help grow soccer in the United States with extensive coverage on NBC Sports Network, significant programming on the broadcast network and our growing digital platforms. Additionally, this agreement complements the partnerships that five of our regional sports networks have with their local MLS teams.”

U.S. national team forward Freddy Adu is returning to America to play in MLS.

Adu, 22, agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Union on Thursday afternoon, team sources confirmed to Sporting News. He will be introduced to Union fans on Friday in a press conference at PPL Park.

Chivas USA had the first shot at Adu, having the top spot in MLS' allocation order for returning national team players, but his salary exceeded the club's budget, according to The Washington Post. Philadelphia was second on the allocation order and quickly reached a deal for Adu.

I know soccer is growing in popularity in America, but the MLS t.v. deal really illustrates how far behind it is compared to other sports...$10 million for the whole league per season? The Pac-12 is likely going to get over $20 million for each school every year once the Pac-12 network is up and running.

That's just their deal with NBC Sports. They also have a deal with ESPN and a deal with Univision that will remain in place, and various clubs have regional broadcasts.

Galaxy sign Ireland international forward Robbie Keane
Former Tottenham striker will join LA as a Designated Player

When the LA Galaxy acquire new weapons, they always go for the big guns.

On Monday, the MLS-leading Galaxy officially announced that they had come to terms with Irish international Robbie Keane, the 10th all-time leading scorer in English Premier League history. He arrives on a transfer from EPL side Tottenham Hotspur.

Keane, who will join the club’s roster upon receipt of his visa paperwork, will be a Designated Player, meaning that the Galaxy will have to get rid of one of their current DPs: Landon Donovan, David Beckham or Juan Pablo Ángel. There are reports that Ángel, the former New York Red Bulls star, will be moved in a trade at some point this week, with Chivas USA and the Philadelphia Union being mentioned as possible destinations.

DP rule changed to allow younger players to cost less

MLS says sliding scale for Designated Players will tempt new talent

NEW YORK — Five years after its introduction revolutionized the face of the league, the Designated Player rule just got a whole lot younger.

On Tuesday, MLS unveiled a new type of DP mechanism that is projected to bring in a new crop of young international stars to the league.

Beginning in 2012, teams can acquire Designated Players based overseas who are 20 years of age or younger for a budget charge of only $150,000, while Designated Players between the ages of 21 and 23 will count just $200,000 against a team’s salary budget. Current DPs represent a $335,000 hit to a club’s player budget of $2,675,000, regardless of their age.

“If you look at it, our Designated Players are anywhere from mid to late 20s to early 30s,” said MLS executive vice president of competition and player relations, Todd Durbin, on a media teleconference call. “We’re getting good players, veteran players and players with experience but we’ve been out of the market for young, promising players in this area.

“We’re hoping with this rule change we’ll tear down this last barrier of entry and bring in quality players at every place in their career and truly have the ability to get into the market of young players to be able to bring in and grow stars of the future for Major League Soccer.”
