Huge ups and downs for Almirola in the course of 8 days. Wins the Talladega Xfinty race. Comes in 4th at the Dega Cup race. Fails post laser inspection and his 4th place finish is encumbered. Drew Blickensderfer was suspended for three races & fined $65k. Almirola was docked 35 driver points and the team 35 owner points. Almirola dropped from 17th to 21st in the standings.

Now the wreck & injury this week..ESPN saying injury not as serious as Hamlins which caused him to miss 4 weeks, but sounds like RPM gonna be cautious and hold out Almirola out 6 weeks.

Between the penalty and injury his only chance at a chase spot is now a win after he gets back in the car I assume late June/early July.

Looking back at the video, I find it amazing that Aric had the wherewithal to drop the window net with a broken back.

I didn't even watch it. I have hated the All-Star races since the mid-90s, just like the All Star event in pretty much every sport.

The first four or five Winstons were good and then meh.

I skipped it as well. Instead I went to the Cardinals-Giants game. 0 runs scored for the first 12 innings.

Apparently the Coca Cola 600 is a big deal here. The main road through Charlotte is blocked with Vendors for 4 days of events, music, races, etc... It's really brought the all the homeless people out of the woodwork.

There's one that tells everyone "Jesus loves you." Most people are kind to him. I suspect Alpha would kick him in the nuts and yell, "'Merica!!"

Nice. Dover's fall race is an even higher stakes playoff race now.

Both Dover races are now in cooler weather.

I like. :notworthy:

Also an acknowledgement by NASCAR that double dogleg 1.5 mile tracks suck.

2018 HOF class announced a couple days ago:
Robert Yates
One of NASCAR’s legendary engine builders and team owners, Yates got started sweeping the floors at the powerhouse Holman-Moody team. He won 77 races as an engine builder for Junior Johnson and DiGard Racing with Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison. He was the championship engine builder in 1983.
Image
As the owner of Robert Yates Racing, Yates won 57 races, 48 poles and the 1999 championship with fellow NASCAR Hall of Fame member Dale Jarrett. Roush Yates Engines, now run by Robert’s son, Doug, builds all the engines for Ford Motor Co. Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams.

Red Byron
A true pioneer of the sport, Byron won the 1948 NASCAR Modified Series championship and the first NASCAR Strictly Stock Series championship a year later. A decorated war hero who raced with a special brace because of an injured left leg, Byron was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers.
Image
When he died in 1960 at the age of 45, Byron had branched out, striving to make more history, by developing an American car capable of winning the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car event.

Ray Evernham
Without question, Evernham helped revolutionize the role of the modern crew chief, helping lead Jeff Gordon to three of his four NASCAR Premier Series championships. As a crew chief, Evernham won 47 races, most of any crew chief in the 1990s.
Image
But that was just the first stage of Evernham’s career. In 2001, he brought Dodge back into the sport after a lengthy absence, building a race-winning outfit from the ground up. After selling majority ownership of the team in 2007, Evernham had a successful career as an analyst.

Ken Squier
Every NASCAR broadcaster — and by extension, every NASCAR fan — owes a debt of gratitude to Squier, who was one of the main reasons stock-car racing grew from a Southern anomaly to a national powerhouse. Squier’s liquid-smooth voice and ability to weave a storyline captivated fans from coast to coast.
Image
Squier called the 1979 Daytona 500, the first live flag-to-flag coverage of what he dubbed "The Great American Race." In 2012, NASCAR announced the creation of the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence, which would be housed in the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Squier and MRN’s Barney Hall were inaugural winners of the award.

Ron Hornaday Jr.
Hornaday, a second-generation racer from Palmdale, California boasts a record four Truck Series championships and 51 wins competing on the rough-and-tumble circuit. Hornaday also holds the Truck Series all-time marks for top fives (158) and top 10s (234).
Image
In 2009, Hornaday won five straight Truck Series races, a feat matched only three other times in NASCAR national series history. Given his first opportunity in the Truck Series by Dale Earnhardt after “The Intimidator” discovered him during a NASCAR Winter Heat Series event, Hornaday gave back to the sport by allowing young West Coast upstarts to stay at his home while pursuing their stock car racing dreams, including future premier series champions Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick.

Wasn't able to watch the race until yesterday. Austin Dillon wins the Coke 600. Fisrt time the #3 car has been to victory lane since 2000 when Earnhardt Sr was the driver.

Kyle Busch was 2nd, Truex 3rd. Truex leads the most laps in the 600 for the 3rd year in a row. Last 2 has flat out dominated. But only 1 win, last year when he led 392 of 400. Sun night led 233, but just like in 2015, when he led 131, he basically loses on fuel mileage. Was the most dominant car for most of the race. With about a lap & a half to go did get passed by Kyle Busch. Truex was a little loose on that last run and had used his tires up trying to reel in Johnson (before he ran out of gas with less than 2 to go) and Dillon.

We'll disagree on that. I like road courses more than the SMI cookie cutters. Plus, Watkins Glen is a great destination and a beautiful track location. Sonoma is meh, unless you are gay or have a wife who likes wine.

Yeah, from what I've seen Watkins Glen is one of the few places that will still come close to selling out. Never been. On the bucket list. Not making it this year, maybe next year.

Not making Dover this weekend (likely going to Oct race), but will be going for the 1st time to Michigan in 2 weeks..

Bring Jr some good luck at Michigan. He snapped out of a funk there a few years back. He needs to do it again. Hate seeing him go out with a whimper so far this year.

I'll be at the Monster as usual on Sunday, top row start/finish. I guess I shouldn't say "as usual" since I skipped last fall so my youngest son could go. We rearranged tickets so all of us could go this year. I think my druggie cousin is in rehab again, which freed up a seat.

Just watching Dover qualifying.

Regardless of what any of us think about NASCAR tracks, the drivers (at least the good ones) unequivocally love Dover. I just heard Martin Truex Jr, Kyle Busch, and Jimmie Johnson in the post-qualifying interviews all say how much they love Dover. Joey Logano said the same thing on NASCAR Race Hub earlier in the week.

When we attended a charity event in New Hampshire last year with the Logano family, my son asked Joey what his favorite track was, and Joey said "Dover" without knowing where we were from.

Hey 93, PM me your cell number and I'll call you when I get there tomorrow. I have to be on duty around 10.
Wow, didn't realize the green flag drops at 1:15 tomorrow. I had become accustomed to the 2:45 starts (which are ridiculous for Dover, one of the longest races of the year even with the 100 laps lopped off several years ago). We will probably leave Milford around 10, catch the bus from the Blue Hen Corporate Center (the old Blue Hen Mall from 1970s fame), and be at the track around 11:30.
