No American League team wants to play in the wild card game.
Kansas City has lost 7 of its last 12 games (WC 1 spot - 1/2 game above Oakland)
Oakland has lost 25 of its last 36 games (WC 2 spot - up 1 game over Seattle)
Seattle has lost 7 of its last 11 games (1 game back)
Cleveland has lost 6 of its last 11 games (4 games back)
Yankees have lost 8 of its last 14 games (5 games back)
Toronto has lost 11 of its last 17 games (6 games back)
This is as opposed to the division leaders who have done better:
Baltimore has won 10 of its last 11 games
Detroit has won 7 of its last 10 games
Angels have won 12 of its last 15 games

I think they're just trying to get back at the lineup for all the games where they pitched lights out and couldn't get dick for run support.

Here's some fodder for AZgrizfan. Phil Hughes of the Twins missed a $500,000 bonus this season by 1/3 of an inning. He was pulled after 8 innings yesterday, 1 out shy of 210 innings and the bonus.

As a clarification, after he pitched in the 8th inning, there was a 1+ hour rain delay.Gil Dobie wrote:Here's some fodder for AZgrizfan. Phil Hughes of the Twins missed a $500,000 bonus this season by 1/3 of an inning. He was pulled after 8 innings yesterday, 1 out shy of 210 innings and the bonus.

How many pitchers, in the modern era, have ever gone back out to pitch after a 66 minute rain delay?Gil Dobie wrote:Here's some fodder for AZgrizfan. Twins could have offered to pay the bonus, just to be good sports about it. He was their best pitcher for most of the season.clenz wrote:How many pitchers, in the modern era, have ever gone back out to pitch after a 66 minute rain delay?Gil Dobie wrote:Here's some fodder for AZgrizfan. Had no idea how good of a season Phil Hughes was having in Minnesota until the bonus story came out this morning. Would you consider Hughes more valuable to his team over Stanton (even if Stanton didn't get injured)? He was 16-10 (team was 20-12) on the second worst team in the league and broke the all-time K to BB ratio. He started 30% of the teams wins. I would have to imagine that a significant number.89Hen wrote:Absolutely. He should get every single MVP vote.DSUrocks07 wrote:
But IF they do make the playoffs. To go from losing 100 games in the year he got hurt to making the playoffs with him having the season he is, then Stanton has to be in the MVP discussion, even for you.![]()
BTW, I never said he won't win the award. I just don't like the idea of a guy on a sub .500 team getting it. Sucks he's saddled with the Marlins, but he is.

I'm interested in knowing how they arrived at that 210 inning figure. I think that could play a role in the final decision.Gil Dobie wrote:Twins could have offered to pay the bonus, just to be good sports about it. 162 games / 5 starting pitchers = 32.4 starts per pitcher.
Did they figure 30 starts with an average of 7 innings to get to the 210 innings? If so, 32 starts is more valuable to the team.
If they figured 6-2/3 innings over 32 starts, that would equate to a little over 213 innings. Maybe they already cut him a break by rounding down to 210.
6-1/3 innings over 32 starts would be just under 203 innings so that combo was probably not used.
Taking even outs out of the equation, an average of 6.5 innings over 32.4 games = 210.6 innings.
I would guess that they either pay him, or run him out to the mound on Sunday for an inning to break the threshold. The latter would set a precedent for future milestones.
