I thought we had agreed on no progess in the last 16 years? I'm glad you ratcheted down the diatribe from the previously erroneous 30 years to now 20, but you're still throwing out numbers that don't jibe. Keep at it.89Hen wrote:So you mean like no progress in 20 years. Holy ****, are you tired of me being right yet?GannonFan wrote:

You're now saying the difference between saying there's no progress in the last 30 years (when there clearly was) versus saying there's no progress in the last 16 years is just semantics? Is that what you call facts these days?89Hen wrote:And I'm glad you're down to arguing semantics. That means my job is done here.GannonFan wrote:

Re: US SOCCER
Why is that so outlandish? Managers and coaches get recycled all the time in other sports, why should soccer be different? Larry Brown has coached something like 1,000 teams in his career (eh, forget the accuracy of that number, it's just semantics), yet people still kept hiring him. Dennis Green moved around in the NFL, as did many others, Mike Kennan did it in the NHL, and Dusty Baker is on what, his fourth team now?bluehenbillk wrote:Wasn't Bruce Arena fired from this job years ago? It's official. Bruce Arena.
I wonder how much longer Sunil Gulati will be around. He has made two disastrous hiring decisions in his tenure. He has had to fire coaches for the USMNT and USWNT shortly after he hired them.

Our best athletes do not play Soccer. They play Football, Basketball and Baseball. This is as good as its going to get for US Soccer. The Euros, and the South Americans are bringing their best people and we trot out out B-Team squad.
The only way I can see us competing in international soccer, is getting NCAA Football and basketball players who do not make it in the pros and convincing them to take up the sport. Then we man have a chance. But how do you get a bunch of men who most have never played the sport to take the field with men who have done this for ages? Could you imagine Derek Henry trying to mark Suarez, Dele, Kane, Ronaldo, etc...? I wonder how athletes like Russell Westbrook, Jamal Charles, etc. would do if they played soccer more than a Henry. Drogba was an outlier, the typical soccer star is smaller.clenz wrote:Could you imagine Derek Henry trying to mark Suarez, Dele, Kane, Ronaldo, etc...? He'd probably be an attacking midfielder - similar to Dele Alli. Dele is 6'2 170. He's probably the best comp there is, and it's still a bit of a flawed comp. In terms of just raw athleticism, Russ is way above more soccer players.

Harry Kane is 6'2 185, but it's a very different build than the 185 Russ plays at

I would bet a guy like Russ, if trained he grew up in an academy like they do in Europe, would have a good shot at being pretty good.
The majority of soccer players at between 5'6 and 6'1. I think the average for non-goalies is like 5'10 or 5'11. I think we are seeing a move to more guys that are 6'-6'3 and lean up front - like a Kane.
It's impossible to compare football or basketball (for the most part) players. They aren't training the same way. They are training muscle groups differently. There's zero chance a guy like Jamal Charles would have been a good soccer player (at any level) with how he was/is built. You'll almost never see a soccer player over 200, and even 190 is quite rare. That build just doesn't mix with the distance that soccer players cover every game, or day in practice. Zlatan Imrahimovic is a "tank" on the field at 6'5 209.

USMNT is so exciting these days that nobody here is even talking about the qualifying games this week? Incredible goal by Bradley last night and the US hangs on for 1 point in a place where they don't usually get many. That point could help tremendously down the stretch.
