Remember when MLB suits tried to explain away the inflated stats of the '90's by calling it the "Live Ball" era?

That announcement was as riveting as me coming out and saying "I jackoff" When the rest come out that will be equal to the rest of you coming out and saying you jackoff.

Now that all is well again in major league baseball, Selig is intent on outing the "cheaters."
Will the owners give back all the money they took from the fans who swore off baseball after the '94 strike and were brought back to baseball by the 1998 home run duel between McGwire and Sosa?
Bud Selig, et al. knew something was rotten in Denmark, but they didn't care because baseball was filling its stadiums again. Years later, they paid $20 million of their profits to their puppet George Mitchell to out the "cheaters."

That is the ultimate hypocrisy. I don't blame the players who used steroids as much as I blame MLB for turning a blind eye to it. Many of the players who used steroids did so in order to maintain a competetive edge. Let's face it; if the guy who is trying to take your job is using, there is pressure on you to use just to keep up. MLB could have put a stop to it, but didn't because of ratings and attendance.JoltinJoe wrote:Now that all is well again in major league baseball, Selig is intent on outing the "cheaters."

I think that they were. My father has lots of MLB baseballs (he's had Phillies season tickets since 1971 and has lots of BP and foul balls) and we did an experiment once where we dropped them from the same height to see how high they bounced. Some years bounced higher than others.AZGrizFan wrote:Remember when MLB suits tried to explain away the inflated stats of the '90's by calling it the "Live Ball" era?![]()

We may not have proved anything, but it certainly raised some questions.

not to turn this into a who's on juice thread, but the one guy I wonder about that has always managed to stay under the radar is Cal Ripken.

It occurs to me that McGwire should have come out on the Friday before the Super Bowl, that way his story wouldn't be the lead on ESPN.

Eh... he's one of those guys who kinda looked the same his whole career, I understand where your head is at with the streak and all. If he was juicin, he was one of the smart ones (though he still was older) who got out before the heat came down. How many times did Clemons have to walk away from the game of baseball? Guy could have just walked away but he kept coming back and it bit him.

Kind of like how Michael Phelps got busted for smokin dope and then A-rod got knocked for Juicing a few days later.... though neither of those two broke the storyBlueHen86 wrote:It occurs to me that McGwire should have come out on the Friday before the Super Bowl, that way his story wouldn't be the lead on ESPN.

As he should. He played much of his career before the "steroid era" and his numbers in the 80's were comparable to his numbers in the 90's. It's not like he had some great jump in power like McGwire, Sosa and Bonds.OSBF wrote:not to turn this into a who's on juice thread, but the one guy I wonder about that has always managed to stay under the radar is Cal Ripken.
I don't know if he used or not, but there is nothing in his profile that makes me suspicious.

Exactly. His best year was the 91, his second MVP season, .323 34HR 114RBI doesn't smack being on the juice. And was at the very beginning of the steriod era. He only hit over 20 HRs twice in the following 10 years.BlueHen86 wrote:As he should. Jeter doesn't look any differrent like all the other guys. No need to accuse him.
On Brady Anderson. He never really appeared different to me over the years and admitted to using creatine, which at the time was a hot thing, especially here in Baltimore. meh, I don't know. That 50 HR season was a freakish year for sure. Those O's lineups of the mid90's were awesome.

I used to like the O's before they went in the tank, these two dudes rocked

His numbers are steady too. Never really a power guy at all. I've drafted him the lst 6 years in my fantasy league, and forget about the SS position for the rest of the year.BlueHen86 wrote:I agree regarding Jeter. Palmero really breaks the "look at him he's freakishly huge" rule in identifying steriod users. Of all the players to get busted, Raffy's disappoints me the most.

Thank God I can't see the picture of Brady. There is controversy on the sexual orientation of Brady here in town. I think mostly of it comes from the husbands and boyfriends of every female in town who swooned over him.AZGrizFan wrote:JMU DJ wrote: I don't know... looks kinda like a beef cake to me

Wouldn't this be the perfect time for guys like Boone to come out?DJH wrote:Brett Boone too.
Gonzalez from the Dbacks is a good one too.
All the lights/cameras are on McGuire (and oh by the way I did it too!).In 2000, he had a decent season in San Diego, hitting .251 with 19 home runs, 74 RBI and a .747 OPS. For a middle infielder, even in an era where there was more power coming from the positions, that is still a rock solid season.
However, Boone was 31 and clearly on what history and sabermetrics showed to be the wrong side of the peak of a ballplayer's career.
So what happens in 2001, when he reports to his first spring camp with the Seattle Mariners? All of a sudden he is a hulking mass of upper body strength, looking more like Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi and less like the average build guy that played in Cincinnati and San Diego.
To say that he improved would be a massive understatement. In his first season in the Pacific Northwest, Boone practically doubled his offensive output from the year before, batting .331 with 37 home runs, 141 RBI and a whopping .950 OPS.
Making it even more mind-boggling is the fact that he did this while playing half his season at Safeco Field, which had a multi-year park factor of 94 offense and 93 pitching, one of the most extreme biases toward pitchers in the majors.
His follow-ups were .278-24-107 in 2002 and .294-35-117 in 2003.
