Exactly and that is how I define it. It may be a bit more strict than others define sport but so be it. I don't care if you want to but I don't put auto racing in with the others you have there for the reason in the post previous.
Now Drag Racing would fall into the not a sport category.

But since you're asking, IMO a sport is a physical activity that doesn't rely on subjective scoring to determine the results. Refs - OK, judges - no way Jose
Unfortunately that leaves boxing out of the equation.
I get your point regarding refs and judges, but I think you are drawing too fine of a line. While scoring in football, baseball, basketball and soccer are not subjective, many of the referees calls are. Balls and strikes are about as subjective as it gets.
I do agree with point about classifying things. I don't think that it's important, but it does make for good discussion.
BTW andy you can thank BH for pulling the definition out of me for you. I know you cared even though you said you didn't. You know I cared too because I provided it for you.

I know you care because I saw your vote for Towson in the Elimination thread.
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."

You meant to say incredible luck in the way of poker. I can't stand that somebody can call a bluff, be correct in calling the bluff and then lose anyway. Poker is gambling, not skill.

Poker is gambling and skill. If it didn't require skill there wouldn't be pro's that could make a living off of it.
The skill is knowing the odds and when to fold, call or raise. There is a lot of luck involved in that you could make the correct decision and still lose, but if you know and apply the correct odds you will win in the long run.

That's why I added "scoring" as being subjective. Just about every sport has rules. Somebody has to enforce them. What I'm saying is that if the scoring is subjective, it's a competition or exhibition, not a sport. See: figure skating, diving, gymnastics... This doesn't mean that what the people do isn't athletic... it's just not a sport in my book.

Leave it to BH to absolutely rip the tits off of it. You can directly compete with and DEFEND against your opposition.
One of the few true E. Coasters that truly gets it. HE HAS GOT TO HAVE SOME ROOTS IN THE WEST!!
In billiards you are competing directly with an opponent and there is usually an element of defense. So, sport or not a sport?
That's a fence sitter. It is an organized, skillful activity, governed by rules and you can defend against the opponents action but the physical activity or lack thereof kinda puts it in the not a sport category.
Now on the other end you have track & field where there is tremendous physical activity and all the other components of a sport except that in most events it's all offense and no opportunity to defend against your opponents actions.

If you disagree with me, you're wrong.
That's the thing about guys that are wrong 93. You're wrong, you don't think you are so you assume the other guy that is correct, is wrong. Sorry for the tough day and all that but it probably has something to do with your cognitive dissonance on what a sport actually is. I wish you luck buddy.

Not sports.
so what element of defending is present in auto racing, but not track/running? Well, distance running at least since being confined to your own lane certainly minimizes defense)

In auto racing not only can you block your opponent you can also bump them out of your way. Track is typically not a contact sport.
Also, as you mentioned, many track events require that you stay in your lane.
