I love this WS match up. For a baseball fan this series will be awesome, no matter that outcome. For those of us who no longer have a team left, it's a win anytime there is a great match up.
Really. Let me know how the TV ratings turn out. I'm sure Fox doesn't feel like a winner right now.

And if you think San Fran - Texas is a better match up than Phila - NYY you are a dunce. :dunce:
My only question is, who really cares how Fox feels? I doubt they'll be going under because of this series. :coffee:

For ratings, no it isn't better.

As a fan of baseball that doesn't hate something just because my team isn't in it....great match up.

NYY vs anyone is a good draw on Television. Philly vs Tampa had the lowest ratings ever.

I don't disagree, but the Yankees aren't in it this year.

What makes this matchup better than any other possible WS match ups? How is it better than say Atl-TB, or NYY-Cinc for example.

If you love baseball that's great, but I don't see how this matchup is better than any of the other possible match ups that could have happened.

True, but my point was the Phillies World Series didn't draw without the Yankees on the other side.

Early returns looks like the Philly/Tampa series will soon be the second least watched WS ever - the game last night drew a 4.7 rating, in line with, but still below, the 4.8 rating that the '08 series had (and 25% lower than last year). And figure that was against a pretty weak Wednesday night lineup. Big Bang Theory is on tonight, Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin, CSI, Grey's, etc make tonight a far more formidable TV night.

Nobody is disputing that point. But it has nothing to do with the question I asked clenz.

Results in for game 1. Not bad consider Fox is unavailable on many cable outlets due to the recent contract displute.

Link
With the New York Yankees losing to the Texas Rangers this postseason, the expectation was that television ratings would be down for this year’s World Series. Last night’s Game 1 between the Rangers and Giants pulled a 10.4 overnight rating, down from 13.8 overnight number for Game 1 in 2009 between the Phillies and Yankees.

But, the number is not considered to be bad. The number is up ever so slightly from the 2008 Game 1 of the World Series between the Phillies and Rays who pulled a 10.3. The Rockies-Red Sox Game 1 in 2007 garnered an 11.8.

According to the SportsBusiness Daily, “The game last night earned a 33.9 local rating in Dallas-Ft. Worth and a 35.9 rating in the S.F./Oakland/San Jose market. “

Gil, I think you're overanalyzing the situation. The math is very simple in comparing the 2008 and 2010 World Series. Philadelphia, San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose, and Dallas/Fort Worth are all comparably sized at 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively in television market size. Tampa/St Petersburg is a significant drop off all the way down to 13th.

In a vacuum, the 5v6 series should absolutely dominate the 4v13 series in Nielsen, but as you and other posters have shown in the past several posts, this is not the case. The two series are about the same in viewership so far.

Drawing conclusions can be dangerous, but it looks like the fans of San Fran and Dallas are just not as fervent supporters, the two teams are not as interesting to the rest of the nation, or a combination of the two.

Another wildcard in 2008 was that the Obamessiah ran his half-hour infomercial the same night as Game 1, which pulled viewers in droves to CNN and FoxNews to see pundit reactions in the week before the election.

The Philly fans have been bashing the the ratings for the World Series. The ratings could get worse if Texas doesn't wake up though. I'm going to enjoy it despite the ratings or what anyone else thinks. I'll have my Giants cap on at the sports memorabilia show on Saturday.

Could get into discussing markets, as Orlando (#19) is only 85 miles from Tampa, as San Jose is included in the SF market, and 45 miles away. Oakland isn't exactly a hotbed for SF Giant fans either.

Fair points. Bottom line, like you said, is it will come down to how exciting the series is, and unless you're a Giants fan, this is becoming a snoozer. MLB has to be hoping Texas can do something at home.

Getting back to 2008, I was looking at the Nielsen numbers. The Philadelphia market drew a 51.8% share of TVs for game 5. This year's Super Bowl (highest watched ever) drew a nationwide 45.0% share by comparison. The problem in 2008 was that Tampa only drew low 30s. That's sad.

Btw, this Philly fan is not bashing the ratings. There's no disputing that 2008 was the lowest rated World Series ever, falling in line with the trend since the late 70s:

IMO, the drop in baseball viewing is due to the popularity of the NFL which is due to fantasy football.

Maybe I'm unique, but I don't care who is playing, I'm watching the WS every year. Not every inning of every game, and I flip channels in 'tween innings, but I watch the majority of it.

For me, although I love baseball, I'm often maxed out on baseball by the time Fall comes around. I really have a hard time watching much, if any, of the World Series, except if my team is in it (and for the vast majority of my life, they haven't been). Too much baseball fatigue after watching it steady for 6-7 months.

I don't watch it steadily all season though. I rarely, if ever, watch an entire game outside the playoffs. I do, however, put a game on my TV (almost always O's or Nat's) as some background entertainment while I'm doing other things around the house. And since those two teams are doodoo right now (although getting better) it's not really worth my undivided attention unless I wanted to put myself in some sort of deep depression in the middle of summer.

I watch baseball when it's on the tube, mostly Twins because that's what is on the local network, and ESPN Sunday, Wednesday whenever, and listen to it on the radio when I can. I'll tivo any other shows and watch them later.

That may be part of it. I think a big part is having all night games that usually end late for east coast viewers.

Speaking for myself - I like baseball, but unless my team is in it, I don't usually stay up late to watch the first few games of a series. If this series gets to game 6 I might watch.

I'm also not bashing ratings, I just think that unless the Yankees or Red Sox are in it the ratings will be down. Of the 8 teams that made the playoffs, I think a Yankees - Phillies series would have drawn the best. Primarily because of the Yankees but I also think the Phillies are a slightly better draw than the other National League teams that were in it this year.

Dumbest thing said in sports this year from last night. Found this on Yahoo!
Though Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" has been the Giants' true playoff anthem this season — watch a ballpark rendition of that song below — I think the team might now have a new contender for a regular AT&T tradition. The Giants, after all, scored seven runs in their next at-bat to blow the game wide open.

I kind of get what he's getting at, but an at-bat for a team can mean their entire portion of an inning, not just 1 player with 1 at-bat.
