When did Bouton say he has no knowledge of Mantle using greenies?

And as for Sandy Koufax. Google "Sandy Koufax" and "Butazolidin" sometime... a muscle relaxer intended for horses... but banned by horse racing at the time Koufax was using it as a PED.

First of all, your last source is wrong. Butazolidin was a trade name for Phenylbutazone, and was a legal, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory that was approved for use of the treatment of arthritis in 1949 and was later
banned for use in humans for toxicity in the 1970s. If you recall, when Leavey's book came out some years ago, she clarified a number of times that she was not accusing Koufax of using an illegal substance.

As for Bouton, I have heard it directly from Bouton's mouth that he never saw Mantle use greenies. But here's a source for you:

I didn't say it was illegal. It was banned by horse racing for use on HORSES at the time. The Kentucky Derby Winner, Dancer's Image, was stripped of its title for using it. So, it was a PED for horses, but not for a baseball player. Got it. Further shows baseball's longtime hypocrisy.

It wasn't illegal. But it was a performance enhancing drug.

And, I hadn't read the Bouton backtrack on Mickey Mantle... so I take that one back. :thumb: :notworthy:

NO! It was a legal drug, prescribed by Koufax's doctor, to treat his severe arthritis. It was later banned for use in humans due to severe toxicity.

And what back-track on Mantle? Bouton never said anything about Mantle using greenies in "Ball Four."

Like JJ said - Koufax used a PRESCRIBED treatment for severe arthritis - a condition the ended his career early. that's not a PED, jelly, that's medicine.
