I was playing in the U of I invitational back in the day when the ball of a Boise State player (who I was marking for) moved clearly after he had addressed it on a green. Me and the other player in the group called it on him after the hole was finished and he denied soling his putter and fully addressing the ball. The head pro at U of I Golf Course made the ruling after the round. He asked the player if he had addressed the ball. The kid said no. He looked at me and the other player in the group and said 'guys...it's a gentleman's sport and we are going to take the player at his word.'

I didn't agree with it at the time, but looking back now, he was spot on.

DJ's ball rolled backward, not forward. It's just as likely that gravity or wind (outside agencies :ugeek: ) caused his ball to role. The USGA is becoming a silly, boutique organization, and they are lucky this ruling didn't matter in the end.

Every other sport can make a call on a reviewable play within a minute except for the PGA. I don't have a favorite golfer, but that's BS to make a guy play 7-8 holes with the prospect of a penalty looming over them. :ohno:

USGA.

I think it was mentioned in the telecast that a PGA Tour rules official in a regular event would have let the original ruling made by the group's walking rules official at the time of the incident, stand.

I stand corrected. PGA/USGA = kind of the same thing to me.

But why would they let this go on for as long as they did in this event? Seems like in a major they'd want to put this to bed quickly - I watched it a few dozen times while they were deliberating and had my mind made up after a couple of viewings.

They are probably the same to most casual fans but they are not the same organization...at all.

That was not a hard ruling to make with or without video. And even after hours of viewing it, they still fucked up the ruling. :ohno:

And not just for DJ. While in the end, it did not matter, if Lowry or Piercy is walking up 18 at -4 seeing they are 1 back of Johnson, they play the 18th differently than if they know they are tied. Not knowing for the last 6 holes or so also throws off everyone's strategy.

Even if Johnson or someone else disagrees with the ruling, the call is what it is. You knew once the official spoke to the announcers on tv that the PGA had decided it was going to penalize him a stroke unless DJ could have offered some sort of explanation. Just do it at 12 (or really well before since this all happened on the 5th hole)

Also, ouch for Westwood.

I'm glad DJ finally won a major. He's come close so often just to blow it.

And like AZ says, he wins every night.

The rewording of the rule is the problem. Go back to if you ground your putter next to or behind the ball and it moves, it's a penalty. This "deemed to have caused it to move" is just stoopid. You can't prove it one way or the other. :tothehand:

Especially since the group's "walking rules official" was the HEAD RULES OFFICIAL.

But, lets not feel sorry for DJ. He won, then got to go home last night and tear this up....

Sorry 89, I gotta side with Jack here.
"Nicklaus told him what he told him and then called the USGA's decision to leave Johnson hanging at No. 12 "terrible" and "very unfair." Nicklaus wasn't finished teeing off on the U.S. Open's elders.

"In my opinion, golf is a game of honor," he said. "That's what the USGA believes in, and that's what most of the players all believe in. And when you have a situation where the official was there ... and said, 'Did you cause it to move?' and [Johnson] says, 'No,' then that should be the end of the story ... How's he supposed to know what caused it to move? You've got greens out there with spike marks and pitches. The ball can move at any time."
http://espn.go.com/golf/usopen16/story/ ... th-us-open

I'll bore you all again with another quick story. I was playing in a PGA Section event when one of my playing partner's was setting up to hit a shot off a severely hanging lie. He was in the process of placing the club behind the ball but had not taken his stance so technically was not in the address position.

The ball moves.

We didn't think he was penalized but called a rules official over for help. The rules official called up to the head rules official who is the PNW Section CEO and one of the best rules guys in the country. They penalized the guy explaining that the ball was at rest until the player approached. That's what changed the position of the ball therefore the player was deemed to have moved it. I asked about gravity and wind and was told that you could make more of a case with wind, but even then it's still a judgement call. I asked what if the ball had moved when the player was still 20 yards up the fairway approaching it?

Then there would be not penalty. It was his proximity. I could have gone on with how far is far enough but had a round to finish so I let it go.

I had always thought you were good until you'd grounded the club and taken your stance (ie: addressed it).

Never did like that ruling. :ohno:

Jack is the man, but he contradicts himself pretty strongly here.
