I probably rode on Marine choppers a few hundred times, exclusively on the CH-46 or CH-53.

CH-46's were exactly as CID describes; frightening and always felt like they were one loose bolt away from breaking apart.

The Marine Corps constantly cannibalized the fleet to keep as many going as they could. I can't recount the number of times I rode on a 46 and smelled of hydraulic fluid from the leaky lines when I got off.

In 95, I was riding my bicycle around the outside of MCAS Yuma and saw a 46 taking off and smoking. The pilots brought it back down as flames were coming out of the engine. Marines rushed out and the thing burned badly before the trucks got to it.

It's the society we live in now. People are in a rush to Facebook to show how much they care. Or the closest TV camera.

I had a female friend post a video on FB of Kobe celebrating in front of his TV as the Eagles won the Super Bowl and she hash tagged it #PhillyBoy.

I replied that it almost makes up for him wearing Dodgers gear to the 2009 NLCS (Phils v Dodgers) or when he stated during the 2001 NBA finals (Sixers v Lakers) when asked what it would be like playing in Philly and he said he didn't care about Philly fans; he was just coming to rip their hearts out.

Yep, I didn't shed a tear about Kobe Bryant.

Whoa. De ja vu. I worked with a guy who was in the Corps in Yuma at that time and told me a similar story.

Another story was him being in a 46 that crash landed on some highway. He said the same thing - you always got off smelling like hydraulic fluid.

May have been the same burning 46. I was in Yuma late 94 to mid 96. We also lost two Harriers, but that's another story.

I’m heartless.

I just skipped a drawing of all the people who died in the crash not one of which I knew or recognized except Kobe...and I didn’t share it.

The meme told me if I just skipped over it without sharing I’m heartless.

The last full NBA game I watched was when Jordan was playing with the Chicago Bulls. Haven't seen more than 10 minutes since then and that was probably at the gym and it was either that or the news.

New & different info regarding last moments of the flight:
In his final transmission, the pilot of a helicopter that crashed, killing nine people including NBA legend Kobe Bryant, told air traffic control he was climbing to avoid a cloud layer, the National Transportation Safety Board said Monday.
When air traffic control asked the pilot what he planned to do, there was no reply, NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy told reporters. The last radar contact was around 9:45 a.m. (12:45 p.m. ET) Sunday, she said.
Radar data indicated the helicopter climbed 2,300 feet and began a left descending turn, she said.
And you have to wonder what someone with Kobe's money was doing flying on a 30-year-old helicopter.
The helicopter was built in 1991 and was most recently registered to Island Express Holding Corp., according to the FAA.
Also,this:
The tracking data in the last 15 seconds of the flight indicates that the helicopter was in a rapid descent, accompanied by a rapid increase in airspeed. The increase in airspeed is analogous to pedaling a bicycle downhill. It's possible that the data indicates the pilot made a diving turn away from terrain at the last minute. Investigators will look at everything including whether there was a mechanical abnormality that distracted the pilot, or caused the helicopter to deviate from a safe flight path.
Regardless, the evidence of a relatively large debris field with relatively small pieces of the aircraft scattered at the crash site indicates the helicopter hit the ground at a high rate of speed. Even if a helicopter experiences an engine failure, pilots use a well-practiced maneuver called "autorotation," where the rotor blades spin using only aerodynamic forces, allowing the aircraft to touchdown at a survivable rate of vertical speed. So, the debris field is an indication that something went terribly wrong.

The chopper dropped 350 feet in its last six seconds and impacted the hill at 176 mph.

If the pilot was disoriented by the fog (highly likely) and took his eyes off, or simply second guessed, his instruments while maneuvering, things could have gone to shit quickly in a helicopter. At such low altitude, there's really no glide time like in a plane to correct out of the mistake. Even an autorotation takes a bit of altitude and you have to know where the deck is so you can time it right.

Doesn't mean it's not a good machine so long it had the proper overhauls and maintenance done when needed.

Oh and RIP Kobe. He was fun to watch. Was one of the topics in "the schoolyard" everyday in HS as he was the player that put the Lakers back on the map. And yeah, time for the media to move on.
