HARRISONBURG - JMU head football coach Mackey Mitthews expressed disappointment late yesterday that Michael Vick has signed a contract to play with the Philadelphia Eagles. Mitthews revealed that he had secretly been in "serious negotiations" with Vick to come on as an assistant football coach, but the deal fell through when the more lucrative return to the NFL came along.

Vick was barred from playing professional football in 2007 after pleading guilty to involvement in a dog-fighting ring, but Mitthews says that didn't bother him much. "The JMU football program is a second-chance kind of place," he says.

Mitthews adds, "Without saying too much, we already had a bunch of promotional ideas involving Vick and the Duke Dog. Vick had some real funny ideas, but I guess we're not going to be able to use them now."

Am I the only one hoping at the press conference he says "Where my dogs at? WOO WOO WOO!"?

I find it funny how many people "hate" Vick for what he did, but don't have much of an opinion on Stallworth. Some guy on the Charlotte Observer's website said he would "turn in his jerseys and quit watching the NFL" if Vick signed. I asked if he did the same with Pacman Jones and Donte Stallworth--both involved in incidents where human was injured and/ or killed" and he gave no answer. That's what is so laughable about this situation. I'm not approving of what he did, but better him to kill pitbulls than humans.

Why would you say "People murderers"? Vick didn't murder any people.

Goodness man, unless I'm missing your sarcasm, you went to Defcon 1 after the Vick signing. :wtf: I was trying to say that though Vick did something horrible, there are people out there playing in the NFL who have done worse IMO, who no one has given any grief or a second thought about. If you re-read my post I pretty much said the same thing as you, it's a horrible thing the guy did, but he paid the price and did his time. I'd feel the same if he was signed by any other team too, lets see what he can do.
I guess that is my bad then. I had been drinking Bass ale all night and I missed your point.

I don't think Vick will help the Eagles, but the people complaining about his signing need to get over it. He screwed up once and went to prison because of it. If he screws up again he will be out of football for life, Commissioner Goodell seems like a no nonsense guy.

Pacman - Cowboys
Stallworth - Eagles

I already hated both of them.

I know people like to compare Stallworth and Vick, obviously killing a person is worse than killing dogs but there some mitigating factors:
Stallworth killed someone by accident and immediately owned up to it.
Vick intentionally killed dogs and lied about it afterwards.

I'm willing to forgive both of them if they show remorse and never do it again. It's the repeat offenders that I have no time for.

 No worries man. My boss (Pats fan) seems to think the acquisition is great "Imagine McNabb, Westbrook and Vick all in the backfield at the same time. What's the defense going to do?"

Don't know if that's going to happen though, he's gotta ride the pine for pretty much the first half of the season. But I assume with the 5 million second year option they plan on getting him in there.

Point being furor over Vick was so much greater... people were FAR more "outraged" (i swear, being outraged is a fvcking cottage industry) about Vick than, Stallworth, Jones, Carruth combined.

Granted, Vick is/was far more popular and known througout the country than those other players (combined?)...

I agree. The sad thing is; if Vick killed the dogs by accident, and Stallworth committed the murder intentionally, I still think there would have been a greater furor over Vick.

I heard that there's already a billboard in Philly that says "Guard your beagle, Vick's an Eagle"
