this is it...

i know as a Twins fan, we had that moment in 87 when we all said "we've got something here" when they decimated Milwaukee in June (including Puckett going 6 for 6 and taking away a grand slam in the series - and then a brawl on Sunday in the finale where Al Newman laid out a Brewers player with a rugby tackle)

In 91 - we had a 15 game winning streak in June that did the same thing...

good for the Fightin's my favorite team in the NL (owing to my time in Philly in '06, driving around a candidate, and rabid Philly sports fan... seriously the guy made me listen to WIP...)

That it happened to the Mets is the greatest double-bonus ever... their season truly is a disaster for the ages...

Second time Martinez has been rained out with the lead and Moyer comes in to finish up the game. Martinez was facing off against Hanson, would have been good matchup. Lee vs Lowe tonight, should be good if Lowe brings his stuff... which he hasn't recently.

The Phillies look terrible as they get swept by the Astros. The pitching has been okay, but they have not been hitting. They better snap out of it soon.

They still have a 6 game lead over the Marlins (7 in the loss column), but they have fallen 3 games behind the Cardinals and Dodgers for the NL's best record.

The Phils hit 5 solo homers (Ibanez 2, Werth, Utley, Ruiz) and beat the Natinals 5-3. Brad Lidge started the bottom of the 9th - but was lifted after loading the bases with 1 out. Ryan Madson came in to get the last two outs and the save.

closers are mental cases... even the elite run in to bumps in the road... and Lidge, well he ain't elite (but Rivera, Nathan, etc have both had occasions of trouble... Nathan is just coming out of about a one month stretch of that)

That's not even funny. '64 was the first year I really started to follow the bigs and play ball myself. (Bunning's perfect game and all that) It took 16 years for them to get to the WS after that and I don't need to relive horrors from my childhood now

I don't think the Phils have given up on Lidge yet, but I think they'd like for Madson to be the closer if he can handle it (if Lidge can't). He has "closer stuff" but has lacked the closer mentality. Also, Lidge has 2 more years on his contract, Myers is a free agent. I don't see the Phillies having 2 high priced closers on the roster, so I expect Lidge to start next season as the closer again.

I may be overconfident, but I'm not at all worried. This team is probably better than the '64 team, and I don't think the teams chasing the Phillies right now are as good as the competition in '64.

I think teams have learned how to hit against him. His slider is usually not a strike (unless the hitter swings), so if hitters can learn not to chase it, Lidge is forced to throw fast balls for strikes and he has gotten rocked because of it.

Apples and oranges. Mauch wore out Short and Bunnings arms. We'll never know other than they were better than the Cards, just burnt out.

Phils win 6-5. Ryan Madson pitches the 9th and gets his second save in as many nights. The Natinals had the tying run on second with nobody out, but Madson got a strike and then Adam Dunn lined into a double play.
