In UEFA news, the Ukrainians beat France 2-0 in the first game of the aggregate. If France can't make up the score on the second leg, they'll fail to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 20 years.
They didn't belong in the last WC. Didn't they get in over Ireland because of a blown hand ball call?

France did get in because of a blown call, but I wouldn't say they didn't belong. If that goal never happened, it would've gone into penalties in which they may have won.

France beat the Ukraine 3-0 to qualify for the World Cup. They needed to win by 3 (and not have the Ukraine score) and they actually did it. Additionally, Portugal, Greece, Croatia, Ghana, and Algeria qualified. Only two spot remain, both to be determined tomorrow...but will almost certainly go to Mexico and Uruguay.

With Brazil 2014 approaching,
January camp offers up taste of what's to come for USMNT

Image
Looking ahead to Saturday night’s US national team friendly against South Korea (5 pm ET, ESPN2/UniMas) it’s hard to draw a greater contrast than to go back four years to the first game on the calendar the last time the USMNT began a World Cup year.

While the game between the US and Honduras was played in the same venue (then known as the Home Depot Center, now known as StubHub Center), that’s where the similarities pretty much end. For starters, on Saturday night, the seats will be filled.

Final 23 man WC roster announced. Klinsmann gives Donovan the shaft. :o

Donovan hasn't been significant in the last three years and he even admits that age is finally getting the best of him. IMO, he's the greatest American soccer player ever, but I'm not sure if his leadership warrants a spot over his fading abilities. I'd also argue that it's Bradley's time to take over the leadership position.

I still would have liked him to be on the team for leadership and possibly late game reasons. There are some guys on the team who he is better than even if he wouldn't have gotten on the field.

This. Also kind of a dick move to deny a guy who's done so much for US soccer a chance to play in a 4th World Cup.

Donovan is obviously slipping, who doesn't. However, he's still one of the best 23 we have. Piss poor decision.

I don't understand why we continue to schedule teams that resemble next to nothing that we'll see at the World Cup.

Seriously, it does us no good playing against a bunker team. We won't see that!

Our first call should've been Sweden. At least Turkey will attack and Nigeria is a Cup team.

More questions than answers yet again but we have no choice but to try and trust Klinsmann. I just don't have a good feeling about it.

People like you who will do nothing but piss and moan no matter what Klinsmann does are part of the problem with US Soccer.

The other issue is people who are going to piss and moan all summer about Landon...it's done. It's over...move past it.

What would Landon have brought to last nights game?

If there was a penalty shot, he would have taken it! And then he would have yelled! Really loud!

Also, besides the penalties and diving, Ronaldo is just really really fucking good, something that Donovan isn't anymore.

Extremely doubtful....though #10 did score last night (Diskerud). It was a 2-0 win against a team that was willing to put 9 in the penalty area on defense in an extremely windy stadium right after a rather tough 2 week camp.

Was it "impressive"? No. Was it would should've been expected last night? Probably.

He wouldn't even have been in position that Wondolowski, Diskerud, or anyone else was.

I like Donovan. He's obviously the best American to play the sport. He's done amazing things for the sport in this country.

He didn't give the team anything to win now, or the next world cup.

Yes, because what I stated was strictly about Klinsmann or Donovan. Get your boyfriends d$&@ out of your face and read next time.

My main point was about the scheduling. We see it every single "Send off Series". Go play teams that resemble what you'll see at the World Cup. We only get 3 games. Last night was a waste and again left more questions than answers.

But while we're here. We better see Green and Brooks on Sunday. It'd be a shame if they're first minutes come while at the World Cup, if at all. Not that that would look bad or anything.

Better showing today.

Jozy, Jozy, Jozy. Where are't thou Jozy? Bad breaks today though.

A lot more offensive flow. Tends to happen when you're not trying to bust through 11 behind the ball.

Defense bent but didn't break until that late PK. 2 shutouts from thr run of play. Still don't understand Chandler at LB. Would rather have Beasley if JK is set on Fabian at RB.

We've seen Aron play the winger position before. Is JK not using his creativity out there simply because he's second in line to Jozy? Would love to see Mix out there too.

Biggest test comes Saturday v. Nigeria.

After today and seeing the debacle that was Ghana/Holland coupled with the draws from Greece/Portugal and Cameroon/Germany, I am still optimistic. Points are to be had in the group. Even if its just 4 points, that may get someone through.

I was thinking if the US can just get 4 points there is a good chance.

Germany/Portugal seems like a draw with them both splitting some series of draw/win over Ghana

I could see the group finishing
7 points
4 points
4 points
2 points

Need to put a decent gd up vs Ghana though. Anything other than a 2 or 3 goal win there will make it tough to advance
