So Hamilton stayed out, on old tires, to maintain the lead and HOPE to finish the race under safety car.
Had F1 followed its own rules, there were three possible outcomes:
1. Let all lappers by. The time taken to do this would have resulted in a finish under yellow and Hamilton victory.
2. Let no lappers by. The race would have resumed with one lap remaining and Verstappen wouldn't have been able to pass six cars to win. Hamilton victory.
3. Red flag the race. All drivers have choice of tire change. Standing start with Hamilton in P1 and Verstappen in P2, both on fresh soft tires. Best man wins in a fair fight. Coin toss on who wins. Max typically has better starts than Hamilton, and if they both collide in turn one, Max wins on tiebreaker.
or, if rules don't matter
4. Instead, they chose the only option that guaranteed Max a championship, which was to take the unprecedented action of removing only the five cars between Lewis and Max, the very reason Hamilton and Mercedes decided to stay out, allowing Max to come up to Lewis' rear, with tires that were two seconds faster per lap, and with Lewis having no DRS to try to re-pass.
Whatever. I've moved on. This will always be an asterisk season. I expect Hamilton to dominate next season. Why leave anything to chance and allow F1 to manipulate next year's championship result as well?
I get it. Mission accomplished for F1. They've extended the drama for another year, which is what their whole goal was in manufacturing this championship for Verstappen. More viewers, more money, more Netflix dollars.
The American version of this is professional wrestling. So the script next year is Hamilton's revenge?

I would assume since this season didn't turn out like Hamilton wanted that he is not going to retire like he hinted?

I think it would have been better for next season if Hamilton had won and retired. Now George Russell will have to play #2 for at least a year. Russell and Norris would make an awesome team in the Silver Arrows.

Those two would be fun to watch. And bring me back to Mercedes as a fan.
Though I do like watching Verstappen race.

That's an interesting one. Not one I'm sure I'd want to win. Seems a bit dubious.
It should be called the I Sucked at Qualifying This Year award.

For the most passes
Champ: Sebastian Vettel 132
2. Fernando Alonso 128
3. Kimi Raikkonen 127
4. Lance Stroll 118
That's an interesting one. Not one I'm sure I'd want to win. Seems a bit dubious.
I was wondering WTF that was when I read it.
I guess it is the difference between qualifying position and race finish? And not all passes on the track.
And I'm guessing it's not net? Not sure.
Anyway, if true, I wouldn't say it is dubious, but it's not something you strive for either at the beginning of the season.

I assume it's how many cars you've passed on the track. But 93 got it right... it means you drive better than you qualify (which is better than the other way around), but Hamilton and Verstappen have only passed each other for the most part. Yes, I know Hamilton had a recent race where he had to start further back and passed 14 cars or so, but that's rare.

The numbers are too low for all passes. I'm thinking it is just a matter of looking at start and finish. But I wonder if it subtracts if you finish below your Qualifying position. Based on the name "passes", I'm guessing it only totals the improvements. But not sure.

Yup. If you qualified better, you'd have less chances, in theory, to overtake. However, even Lewis or Max have gone to P20 and found back end P1 or P2. That doesn't occur often for them like it would for Gasly or Vettle.
Round 20 - Qatar
He may have just missed out on a podium after a late Virtual Safety Car in Qatar, but Sergio Perez’s charge through the field was nevertheless a sight to behold, the Mexican going from 11th on the grid to fourth at the flag - completing an astounding 17 overtakes along the way - to help bring Red Bull to within five points of Mercedes in the constructors’ title fight..

I'm not sure exactly how they're defining an "overtake" (the quote above is about as close to a "definition" as I can find), but they DID cite Raikkonen (who is apparently leaving Formula1) in the last race at Abu Dhabi as starting 18th and moving as high as 11th before being forced out by "car problems."

You might think an overtake is any occasion when one car passes another, but that’s not the definition used for analysing data. Firstly, an overtake has to take place on a flying lap, which means first-lap moves technically don’t count.
Secondly, any overtake must then be maintained all the way to the finish line on that lap, so if for example one car gets by another only to be immediately re-passed, that amounts to zero overtakes rather than two.
An overtake has to be for position, so lapping a backmarker or unlapping one of the frontrunners doesn’t count. And it also has to happen on track, meaning position changes as the result of pitstops aren’t real overtakes either.

Just saw this article where a former team owner is claiming that Sir Lewis is "too nice" to beat the "arrogant" Verstappen.

93, I agree that the rules need to be applied consistently. But they haven't done that all year (an issue IMHO) and sometimes it has very much benefited Mercedes. This time it didn't.
That said, I can't say that I am not happy that Hamilton didn't get his 8th championship.
And Hamilton can use this to further his F1 racist talking points into a profitable speaking career. So maybe Masi was just doing him a favor......
Haven't followed F1 for more than a few years but have seen enough documentaries/YT vids on historic battles/events to know the FIA has always played these kinds of games.
And yeah the irony of 93 being a fanboi of a wokenista like Lewis is pretty thick.
Well deserved championship for Max, hell of a defense by Checo. Not getting fresh tires on lap 37 is a head scratcher. Maybe next year Merc.
