Sox/Yankees games are too long....I'll still watch them...but they need to pick up the pace...both teams...

The two longest combined times for double headers in MLB history belongs to these two teams

08-18-2006
8h 40m
08-18-2006
New York 12 at Boston 4
New York 14 at Boston 11

That includes the longest game in AL history, 4 hours and 45 minutes. That means the other game was just under 4 hours.

Yes, they were high scoring games, but the length is two hours longer than the next closest in terms of length...1952 6h 46m between New York and Brooklyn

By contrast the shortest game in MLB history are 51 minutes (NY v. Phil in 1919 and 55 minutes) and shortest double header 2 hours and 20 minutes for both games

Hell, when Colorado and San Diego went 22 innings in 2008 the game was 6 hours and 16 minutes.

One of my good friends is a diehard Red Sox fan and he agrees that they take way too fucking long. Two years ago we watched the Angels/Red Sox ALDS and the games from Anaheim started at 10 pm and didn't end til 2 am.

It's not a slap in the face to the common man as you have spun it to mean. It's stating what most baseball fans feel.

Moral of the story is if you disagree with Travis, he'll spin it to make you seem like Hitler and more importantly, to make himself feel better.
This is why I stopped replying. I had a big thing typed out where I picked 10 random games, pulled the score, hits, pitching changes and total time of game and compared it to the Yankees/Red Sox games.

Turns out other games have saw a similar number of pitches, pitching changes, MORE RUNS, MORE HITS, and yet they came in at an average of 2 hours and 48 minutes. Comapred to the 3 hours and 40 minutes, or so, of the Yankees/Red Sox games. However, I'm sure Travis would throw some 9/11 or other stupid shit at me...it just wasn't worth it
Ah Clenz, now you're just dick slapping the working man in the face with this stuff.

Double headers?
A game from 1919?
A 22 inning game?

No meds, no need to drink. Yes, part of it is rambling. The other part is trying to get Travis to understand that games shouldn't fucking take that long, especially 9 inning games. However, I should just stop I don't need any more 9/11, working man shit thrown at me from someone who doesn't work.

I don't disagree. My problem is with Joe West first even opening his mouth on the matter. He has now publically shown a bias against Boston and New York and has jeopardized his integrity in the game going forward. Every questionable call he makes against Boston and New York will now be scrutinized by the media and fans alike. HE also comes off as a whiny bitch complaining about time of games and considering what he makes per game he should just shut up. He thinks he is being over worked in games that go over the league average? I don't see him offering to run laps on games that go under league average to make up for the extra time he got off on those games.

Baseball has ALWAYS been boring.

7 minutes of action crammed into 3 short hours (4 if it's post-season or Yankers vs. Red Palms).

There's actually more action (time-wise) in a 3-hour baseball game than a 3-hour football game.

When did Joe West complain about his salary? His complaint about length of games is valid, I'm not sure what his compensation has to do with it.

He should have kept his mouth shut though. MLB doesn't want players and coaches complaining about Umpires, Umpires shouldn't complain about players. This issue should have been handled behind the scenes and the Yankees and Red Sox shouldn't be singled out, even if they are the two most obvious examples.

True dat. Me personally, the first 7 1/2 innings can drag on forever if I'm at the game live, but after they stop sellin' the crazy juice in the bottom of the 7th, the game needs to end ASAP.

Dude, Cowboy Joe West has never had any integrity when it comes to being an umpire - he's always been a crap of an umpire. While he's absolutely right that the Sox and the Yanks do drag games out interminably long with things well beyond just waiting out pitches, saying so can't hurt his credibility since West has always been one of the least respected umps out there. He's a bum and will always be a bum but he was spot on in his opinion on this one.

People that are complaining about the length of a sports events are not sports dorks like me :thumb:

I just can't relate to someone wanting a sports event to run a shorter timeframe, unless it's a blowout. Otherwise you all are probably just mild manored sports fans, which I have no problem with, just can't relate to wanting a sports event to be shorter.

The irony is that Joe West is the worst umpire in the game, bar none.

He should use words like "pathetic" and "embarrassing" sparingly.

Incidentally, Mariano Rivera, who never says anything controversial, blasted Joe West today.

The Yankees play long games against everyone; not just the Sox. I would guess the Sox games go longer too. when you get the two together, expect a long game.

Both teams have offenses which, year in and year out, rate among the game's best. Both teams feature many disciplined hitters who are skilled in taking pitches and working counts. When I see a Yankee-Sox game at the Stadium, it is not uncommon to see on the scoreboard pitch count that both starters hit 100 pitches sometime in the 6th inning.

More pitches mean more pitching changes, and both mean longer games. It is inevitable that the teams with the game's best offenses will play longer games when they get together.

I agree with Travis that West has publicly expressed a bias against the Yankees and the Sox. He shouldn't be allowed to ump games for either teams.

Wrong.

Think of a movie that you really like. Suppose that movie was 2.5 hours long. Now suppose that I tell you that I am going to make that movie 4 hours long, but I'm not going to add anything substantial to it, I'm just going to add 1.5 hours of Nomar Garciaparra fidgeting with his batting glove. Do you think you still like the movie the same?

Let's make halftime at football games 30 minutes, and let's also add 30 minute intermissions after the first and third quarters as well. "Mild manored" sports fans will hate it, but "fierce" sports fans will love it becasue the games will be much longer.

At the state hockey touney in Minnesota where we spend a day watching 4 games, it's nice to have a long bread to stretch you legs and visit with people that you haven't seen since the previous year. Even at Green Bay Packer games we see the same people every year, and only at Packer game. I love the competition on the field, but also like visiting people. I'm still the person that likes to get there early and leave late.
