so what element of defending is present in auto racing, but not track/running? Well, distance running at least since being confined to your own lane certainly minimizes defense)
In auto racing not only can you block your opponent you can also bump them out of your way. Track is typically not a contact sport.
Also, as you mentioned, many track events require that you stay in your lane.
BH nails it again.
Here's some defense that fails after several attempts with success.
NR2003! Nice!! I wasted about half a year of my life playing that game.
Here's a real-life example of Earnhardt blocking like an SOB at Richmond in '86. Then, when all hope is lost, just wreck the guy when he finally gets by you (hopefully without wrecking yourself too ). Take that, Waltrip. I was at this race, btw.

You meant to say incredible luck in the way of poker. I can't stand that somebody can call a bluff, be correct in calling the bluff and then lose anyway. Poker is gambling, not skill.
Poker is gambling and skill. If it didn't require skill there wouldn't be pro's that could make a living off of it.
The skill is knowing the odds and when to fold, call or raise. There is a lot of luck involved in that you could make the correct decision and still lose, but if you know and apply the correct odds you will win in the long run.
This reminds me of the article I read (maybe it was on these boards) about a curling team crying because the crowd started heckling them and it made them lose.

That may be true but it doesn't change the opinion. How is it different from Weight Ligting? That ain't a sport either. They are activities that you do to prepare you for sports.

Not going to comment on weight lifting but track is the original sport. You are racing head to head using your body(not using other devices like cars - for those that are arguing that car racing is not a sport) directly against your opponent and first one to the finish line wins.
Running to increase fitness is not a sport. The racing against others aspect of running is when it becomes a sport.

Yes but as I said earlier by the way I define a sport is that you have to be able to actively defend. It's just like drag racing. Pure offense and no defense. Not a sport but a great athletic activity.

Guess we will just have to disagree that you need to have defense to make something a sport.

So a baseball game halted for rain eliminates baseball as a sport.
Haven's seen a baseball game halted by "WIND"
What the F is the difference? Both sports are halted when it becomes unplayable. If the ball won't sit still on the green because of wind, you can't play. NO different than rain halting a baseball game.

The only thing that has halted a golf match I've been in is lightning. Played in rain, tornado warnings, snow with frozen water hazzards, heat, 60mph winds etc.
