NHL
Re: NHL
Gonchar's injury scares me, since he normally plays a TON of minutes for Pittsburgh. But hopefully the Pens can bring in another decent defenseman and/or the others can step up their games.
Part of me really wishes the NHL would issue a suspension on Ovechkin for the hit. But to be honest, I don't think it was an intentionally dirty hit. It just ended up that way. Still, I think it deserved more than a mere minor penalty. So a suspension is probably a bit much, but hopefully there's at least a fine. Even if it wasn't intentional, the league should send some sort of message that knee-on-knee hits like that really need to be avoided.

I don't see how you can say it was dirty, or deserving of punishment.Ovi took three steps towards Gonch, led with his shoulder, Gonch saw him, tried to sidestep, and in doing so left his leg out. Ovi peeled off, but knee hit knee and Gonchar went down. If it had been Ovi that went down, would you still want him punished?JayJ79 wrote:Gonchar's injury scares me, since he normally plays a TON of minutes for Pittsburgh. I dunno, it may be the homer in me, but I just saw a collision players tried to avoid which just made it worse. I hope Gonch is alright, he was one of my favorites when he played for the Caps, but to act like Ovechkin did something dirty, sorry, I gotta take issue with that.

Re: NHL
take it from someone with NO rooting interest in this series... it was a clean hit. Gonchar just was unlucky... which is unfortunate... I like him as a player... but Ovie shouldn't be punished for something like this.DukeJack wrote:I don't see how you can say it was dirty, or deserving of punishment.Ovi took three steps towards Gonch, led with his shoulder, Gonch saw him, tried to sidestep, and in doing so left his leg out. http://www.opensports.com/community/use ... 11766be289Grow the brand? Yes we Cane!
When it comes to branding, it's hard to come up with a solid defense of the NHL. Their efforts to make the game faster and more friendly to casual fans has seen some success, but the sheer fact that they're still relegated to Versus most of the time renders their collective brand suspect, to say the least.
But that's not to say that there aren't successes within the NHL. Forbes recently did a story on the fastest-growing team brands in the sports world, looking at which teams in each of the professional sports leagues showed the greatest percentage growth in brand value over the last three years. (As an aside, it's amusing to me that the NHL wasn't even mention in the main article, and is relegated to the back of the bus in the photo-gallery, but I digress.) Here was the breakdown of the Top 5 teams, according to Forbes:
Team - Three-year growth in brand value - Current brand value
1. Pittsburgh Penguins - 88% growth - $28 million
2. Edmonton Oilers - 71% growth - $22 million
3. Montreal Canadiens - 69% growth - $47 million
4. Carolina Hurricanes - 55% growth - $19 million
5. Buffalo Sabres - 54% growth - $19 million

Caps beat Pens 5-4 in overtime to force a 7th game. Game 7 will be played Wednesday night in Washington.
Vancouver and Chicago are tied 3-3 after 2 periods. The Blackhawks lead the series 3 games to 2. If Vancouver can even the series they will host game 7 on Thursday.

Looks like the magic is coming to an end for the Canes. Complete meltdown these past two games.
I imagine Boston closes this one out back home on Thursday.

i aint gonna celebrate until they do, I had my doubts the oither night wether they would pull it off... I had no doubts they could, but doing and having the ability to do so are two different things...Mountaineer wrote:Looks like the magic is coming to an end for the Canes. In any case Carolina is a good team and its been a good series... sorta.... aside from the one OT game, each game has been lopsided.
Whoever advances from both this and the Wash/ pitt series should make a good eastern conf championship

I'm a natural pessimist.
Yeah, the series has been pretty decent, but there's no way (after this implosion) that the Canes win Game 7. Nope. Ain't happening.

Re: NHL
The Canes aren't done yet, but it's really darn close. The lack of a solid shut-down defenseman is really hurting.

Pittsburgh beats Washington 6-2 in game 7 of their series and advances to the Eastern Conference final.
The Penguins scored the first 5 goals of the game and the Caps were never able to make it close afterwards.
The Penguins will play the winner of the Boston - Carolina series which is tied at 3 games each, with game 7 scheduled for tonight.
