Assuming Klingsmann (sp) and the Germans don't come to a handshake tie agreement on the final match, and the US loses, can we still advance?

yeah, it's possible to lose to germany and still advance on goal differential. but, it will depend on what happens in ghana - portugal game (and how many goals a loss to germany).

Assuming a loss, what is the magic number for US?

Score some goals, lose by 1 and hope Ghana doesn't win by more than 1

goal differential right now is:

US 1
Ghana -1
Portugal -4

So, right now we have a 2 goal buffer on Ghana and a 5 goal buffer on Portugal.

So if we lose by more than 1 things don't look good?

Right now standings:
Germany 4 pts, +4, 6 goals for
US 4 pts, +1, 4 goals for
Ghana 1 pt, -1, 3 goals for
Portugal, 1 pt, -4, 2 goals for

US advances by tying or beating Germany.
US advances with a loss, if:
  • -Ghana-Portugal tie
-Ghana beats Portugal by 1 if we lose by 1 and Ghana does not score more goals than we do in the final game
-Portugal beats Ghana and they do not finish with a better goal differential than the US and don't score more goals for the tournament than we do

So confusing. If only Bradley didn't shit down his leg that last 30 seconds (and the rest of the game for that matter)...ugh.

I think this is where my money is. Both games will be played at the same time.

Germany only needs tie to win the group, they will play it safe. Neither side will push up unless they fall behind.

Exactly.

Germany needs one to win
US needs one to advance

US has a coach that has some close ties to Germany.... I've got a feeling on a draw.

Portugal wont make up the GD but will try. Ghana and Portugal draw

Just to throw this out there, Clint Dempsey played soccer for Furman University in the early 2000s.
