ヤクルトからＦＡ宣言した五十嵐亮太投手（３０）の移籍先としてレッドソックスが急浮上した。すでにレ軍は代理人のアーン・テレム氏にオファーを提示。フィリーズに加え、メッツも獲得に乗り出し、両リーグ東地区３球団による争奪戦となっているが、中継ぎ陣が手薄なレ軍が有力となった。五十嵐はこの日、自主トレをスタート。同じ施設で練習するレ軍・松坂大輔投手（２９）からキャンプの流れなどの情報を得た。

　レッドソックスが五十嵐獲得に動いた。大リーグ関係者が「レッドソックスは五十嵐に興味を持って動いている」と発言。すでに代理人テレム氏に２年総額２００万～３００万ドル（約１億７８００万～２億６７００万円）のオファーも提示したもようだ。

　レ軍は、斎藤、ワグナーの救援両腕がそろってブレーブスに移籍。守護神パペルボン、セットアッパーの岡島、バードの３人は盤石だが、６、７回を埋める救援投手の補強が急務だった。レ軍は０７年に２年総額３００万ドルで契約し、欠かせぬ存在となった岡島同様の活躍を見込んでいるという。松坂、田沢とともに、日本人投手が３人いることも、初めての環境に飛び込む五十嵐へのアピールポイントといえる。

And if you mean the one before him, well Okajima has been one of the most important parts of the bullpen since he came to town.

Ohhh, you mean the one before Saito and Okajima.... are you fucking crazy? Are you going to call that signing bad because of one injury plagued season after the guy had a solid first season and a cy young caliber second season.

A fourth ACE caliber starter who once he was past his injuries in '09 came back to pitch great down the stretch in September going 3-1 in 24.1 innings with a 2.22 ERA and 20 Ks? That japanese pitcher?
