LaRussa in the news again

The papers were reporting today that Tony LaRussa is resurrecting his idea of batting pitchers 8th in all non-DH games. While I LOVE the idea (as it allows for the insertion of a second lead-off hitter in the 9 slot), the media is going to start bashing the 9-hole again. They did it the last time, and they'll do it again. It's sad because it's a great strategy, though it doesn't go far enough. Personally, I would have batted a guy like Hershiser in the 1 spot. I don't think anyone's even considered this since the days of Ruth and Ruffing. Given the right pitcher, it's a great thing to do.

With the right pitcher, yes.
the Dbacks batted Micah Owings in different spots when he pitched - but then, Owings is the best hitting pitcher in MLB.

From what I saw of Owings last year, that's true. But I never heard of AZ playing games with his slot in the lineup. I like it. But from what I saw of Owings, I think AZ should consider playing him the way the BoSox played Ruth: stick him in the OF on his non-pitching days to take advantage of his bat.

They have actually thought about him at first (our outfield - Byrnes/Young/Upton) is solid.
He does pinch hit on his off days.

I say give him the 1st base job 4/5 days, and let Jackson play the 5th day when Owings is pitching. That fella can MASH!!! Allows us to get rid of Tracy altogether, and bring in another quality pitcher!
