Former NBC4 (Washington D.C.) television sports anchor George Michael died early this morning, according to his former employer.

"The George Michael Sports Machine," which aired from 1980 to 2007, showed highlights of the weekend's sporting events. The trendsetting program became the first nationally syndicated sports highlights show in 1984 and was eventually broadcast in 194 markets across the United States and in 10 foreign countries.

Michael's daughter, Michelle Allen, said he died Thursday morning from complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia at Sibley Memorial Hospital.

This is sad. I really liked the robotic, droll way in which he reported sports. I only got to see his show a few times due to its REALLY late broadcast in the Sac market, so I never really knew when its run stopped. Had no idea it extended as long as it did.

A legend in the video sports reporting medium, to be sure, right up there with early Chris Berman, Tom Mees, etc.

I always figured his night job moonlighting as the lead singer in Wham would eventually catch up with him.
