Dammit...I was hoping he wouldn't be able to play. He's a half-assed hack. I've never seen someone give so much for about 45-50 minutes and then just play dead the rest of the match.

Then why would a Premier League team extend his contract?

I'm aware, but it's not like they're some bottom of the table championship team, or a Portugese team, they're mid to upper table in the PL.

Have you ever watched him play for Fulham? It's like two completely different players. For club, he busts his nuts running up and down the field, chasing down the ballcarrier, basically playing with effort. Then a few days later the national team will have a game and he'll play with little effort, no hustle, sloppy mistakes on the ball and turnovers caused by trying to juke five guys without advancing the play.
I know jet lag affects people differently, but damn. And honestly? It wasn't until Dempsey got benched at Fulham that he started playing balls-out like he does now. I would be all in favor of sitting him for Holden against El Salvador or Holland. For whatever reason, he doesn't try for the USMNT like he does Fulham.

Fulham!
That's almost like praising a player at Hannover in the Bundesliga!

Yeah, what he said!
You just never know which player you're going to get with him. And honestly, when you only have 3 guaranteed matches in the WC, you need someone who is going to give everything they have every game.

He looks good at Fulham. Maybe, his EPL experience will help us against England. Maybe playing against those guys will motivate him as well.

I would rather see Charlie Davies (in his current condition) start than Holden.

Dempsey returns from 7 1/2 -week layoff
TURIN, Italy (AP)—American midfielder Clint Dempsey returned from a 7 1/2 -week layoff, entering as a second-half substitute Thursday night as Fulham lost to Juventus 3-1 in the first leg of the Europa League’s third round.
The 27-year-old from Nacogdoches, Texas, replaced Simon Davies in the 61st minute, his first appearance since injuring his right knee in a Premier League game against Blackburn on Jan. 17. It was initially feared that the injury might cause him to miss the World Cup, but the Cottagers said two days later that Dempsey’s knee had sustained only moderate damage.

USA international Dempsey suffered a thigh injury in Sunday's 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic in the Premier League and has been ruled out of Thursday's European encounter.
Roy Hodgson fears Dempsey may be out for 'some time' and it leaves the Fulham boss short of options, particularly with Zamora struggling to shake off an Achilles injury.
