Stars On Ice Once Again Rejects Johnny Weir

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- American figure skater Johnny Weir says he doesn't understand why the only ice skating tour in the United States doesn't want him.

"I'm not going to get on the ice and strip down naked and roll around," said Wier, a three-time U.S. ice skating champion.

Weir keeps his sexuality private, but his flamboyant costumes and routines at the Winter Olympics in February drew comments about his lack of masculinity.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination (GLAAD) launched a protest against the Stars on Ice tour, claiming Weir's rejection was because he was deemed "not family friendly."

The tour and its biggest sponsor, Smucker's, said GLAAD had "inaccurate information" and its show just didn't have room for Weir.

The tour claims the continued snubs by the tour has nothing to do with Weir's sexuality but rather the lack of available space for him.

Seems kind of odd that they would not have space for a three time national champion even while he was in the middle of his three consecutive US Championship wins.

I'm confused. Are there OTHER guys in the Stars on Ice tour?

Because if there are, then they've ALREADY got gays in their group. Everybody KNOWS all the male ice skaters are gay.

I know you're trying to make a joke, Z, but you have a point.

The presence of a gay man on the tour isn't what they're trying to avoid. It's the flamboyant, drama-queen, attention whore with the fur and the sparkles and the media following him around (this article is further proof) is what they're avoiding.

This gets to the heart of what it takes to be gainfully employed anywhere.

We all have our little idiosyncrasies. We learn to keep those compartmentalized for the sake of employment. This matter is no more than an employer choosing to screen its employees. I'm guessing Stars on Ice has no problems hiring homosexuals. They just don't want flamers.

Jon, I enjoyed a nice dinner with you and a couple other folks from CS last year in Baltimore. Had you showed up in a flamboyant costume and a mink stole around your neck, blowing kisses to all the menfolk, I might have been uneasy.

I think that's where Stars on Ice is coming from. They don't want to have their paying customers have to explain to their kids why that lady has a deep voice, if you know what I mean.

Get off your high horse, Travis. They're a BUSINESS. They have an image they're trying to portray. He doesn't fit that image.

To bad, so sad.

Hard to believe, after all these years of Stars on Ice actually having skaters who were openly gay, that all of a sudden they have a problem with gay people. I doubt Weir's sexuality was the problem - the guy has a reputation of being difficult to work with and being extremely outspoken. Maybe they didn't want to deal with him?

Dead on 93. I had a fairly good argument with dback over the gay pride parade by stating basically this exact same thing about a year ago.

Flamers hold the gay movement back a whole bunch and they don't want to recognize that fact. You want across the board acceptance of assholes like Wier and their little attention parades. I got news for you...that ain't gonna happen. You may find pockets of acceptance here and there but wide acceptance of a culture that glorifies these kinds of assholes is a long, long way off.

That is the same case as it is with any group.
