Abandoned By NY & The Yankees, Ronan Tynan Finds New Home

Ronan Tynan, the great tenor, is hardly the first Irishman to land in Boston looking for a fresh start.

It’s not Ireland he’s just left but New York, the city that embraced him and which he hugged back. He became a star in New York, an inspiration. His legs were amputated below the knee, but he became a physician. And then, in his 30s, he discovered that God had planted in his throat a voice that can make hearts rise and eyes rain.

He sang for presidents and he sang at Yankee Stadium, a version of “God Bless America’’ that made the hair stand up on the back of your neck and Yankees fans stand up and cheer. It was a soothing tonic for New Yorkers who would look to where the two great towers once stood in lower Manhattan and feel like crying.

But then he said something in jest that someone considered anti-Semitic and the reservoir of good will he had built up over a decade drained away in seconds. Strangers who once cheered now sneered. A doctor said he would let him die on an operating table if given the chance.

And worse, worst of all, the Yankees dumped him. Wouldn’t even hear his side of the story.

So, the other day, Tynan picked up a pen with the hand that still wears the bulbous World Series ring with the diamond-studded NY and signed a bunch of papers and closed on a place on Lewis Wharf and is now, as he approaches 50, a Bostonian. And as he tries to figure out where, aside from the Four Seasons, he can get a good meal in this town, he wonders where he goes to get his reputation back.

This is what happened in the apartment building on East 54th Street in October: A realtor was showing the apartment next to Tynan’s and asked if Tynan would say hello to some prospective buyers. The realtor told Tynan the prospective buyers were “a couple of nice Jewish ladies.’’ Tynan warned the ladies he often sang in his apartment.

“How’d you like living next to a loud tenor like me?’’ Tynan asked them, jokingly.

Turned out they wouldn’t, and they didn’t buy the apartment. A short time later, another person was looking at the apartment and Tynan was putting the key in his door when a different realtor came out from next door and said they had another prospective buyer.

“Don’t worry,’’ the realtor said, “they’re not Red Sox fans.’’

“As long as they’re not those Jewish ladies,’’ Tynan replied.

The woman looking at the apartment, Dr. Gabrielle Gold-von Simson, stepped into the hallway and asked Tynan to explain himself. Whatever he said, she didn’t buy it.

Gold-von Simson, who is Jewish, called the Yankees and asked how they could let an anti-Semite sing “God Bless America.’’

The Yankees took her version of events and couldn’t be bothered to get Tynan’s. The team has declined to discuss the issue publicly, saying it’s an internal matter.

That's shameful.

Nothing to excuse. The guy said something that was stupid (even if he didn't mean any malice by it) and the Yankees didn't want to deal with it.

They proabably should have listened to his side of the story............then maybe we wouldn't have to listen to Kate Smith every single game.

What exactly did he say that was stupid? Is calling a couple of Jewish ladies "a couple of Jewish ladies" a grounds for termination? If so, this is a frightening country we live in.

Perhaps its not what he said that was stupid, but the fact that he said without any apparent context.

He said he was fine with the purchasers as long as they weren't jewish ladies.

Really - "As long as they’re not those Jewish ladies"?

Perhaps its not what he said that was stupid, but the fact that he said without any apparent context.
So if you were the employer, would you not investigate the context?

We're all screwed up here because of the editing.....

But yes, as I said - they should have investigated it.

Just to be clear here though - Tynon was not an employee of the Yankees. He was a guy that volunteered to sing at the Yankee games and the Yankees were happy to have him. They apparently didn't want to deal with any potentially anti-semetic issues considering a large portion of their fanbase is Jewish.

I don't really see an issue with what they did. Nor do I see an issue with what he did. He made amends for what was under his own admission an embarrasing misstatement. But that doesn't mean the Yankees need to give crap about him anymore.

he didnt say as long as they weren't jewish ladies. He said as long as they weren't those jewish ladies, referring to the previous ladies who looked at the place.

Obviously the lady there then wasn't aware of the previous ladies, and once she gave him a chance to explain she accepted his apology. The Yankees gave him no such chance to explain what happened.

OK I'm going to go to the Diamond District and say hey - "I'll never buy jewlery from those Jewish guys." Now I'll secretly be referring to those two guys that ripped me off last year that just happened to also be Jewish....and hey I'm sure none of the Jewish guys on 44th St. will be offended and they'll all understand. That's the same issue as this.

Sure his statement was out of context, but the Yankees have no obligation to this guy. He was a volunteer singer. Like it or not you have to ask your why would the Yankees take any chance with negative PR for a guy that can be replaced by a recording?

And this is not negative PR. Nobody who is a Yankee fan gives two shits about this issue. The only people that care are those that will never be Yankee fans anyway (everyone except Yankee fans :D ).

Yes, I suppose their PR staff is too busy with all the cheaters on their roster.

The Yankees overreacted. It was a regrettable incident. I think Tynan is a decent person.

I think the biggest thing here is they didnt even sit down with him. For the time he gave to them over the years he deserved atleast that. If after the meeting they still felt it was best to remove him from singing at Yankee Stadium then fine, but he deserved a meeting and he deserved to be told in person.

Assuming he was a big Yankee fan, he basically didn't "give" them any time at all - he got to go to games for free and walk out onto the field right in the middle of it and perform for a huge crowd. That's a pretty sweet deal.

So did he just move to Boston, or is he also going to sing at Red Sox games??
