It's the sort of thing that is much more likely to happen in fantasy baseball than in real life, but according to sources, an idea has been kicked around the Phillies' organization internally, with discussions about proposing a swap of slugger Ryan Howard for St. Louis superstar Albert Pujols.
It's not fully clear whether the Phillies actually have approached the Cardinals with the idea, and even if St. Louis were to seriously consider such an offer, executives with the Cardinals would have to swallow very hard before dealing Pujols, a player widely regarded as the best in the sport.
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro flatly denied that the internal discussions have taken place. "Lies," he said. "That's a lie. I don't know who you're talking to, but that's a lie."

Why in the WORLD would St. Louis want to do that deal?
Maybe if it included Halliday too...

the thinking is they may not be able to afford Pujols next contract and while Howard would be expensive, it would likely be at a lower price then Pujols. St Louis could also get a discount from Howard if he was inclined to play for less to be where hes from.

There's only 3 teams who can "afford" Pujols' next contract. Philly ain't one of 'em.

OK, four. Dodgers I'd normally include but with their current court battles probably not.

Where do you guys think Pujols would go after 2011 if he doesn't stay with the Cards. The Yanks have Texiera already, the Red Sox may have Gonzalez in a few months, he'll only get what the market can bear....

Dont count out Boston or NY even if they have Tex and AGOn. Both could alternate Pujols and the guy they already have between 1B and DH.

If the Phils don't do this it won't be because of money - they could swing it for Pujols if push came to shove. With Brown coming up guys like Ibanez and Werth aren't long for the Phillies, and Rollins won't be commanding big $ next contract. I just can't believe that Pujols would be available, but I'd package Howard for him in a heart beat, and I love Howard.

Absolutely.
